Connor self-weaned two days ago. He'd been very erratic with nursing for a couple weeks, and didn't nurse for two days, then tried to do it. But he wasn't doing it properly, so I said, "If you want to nurse, you have to do it right."
He said, "I don't remember how."
I said, "That probably means you've outgrown having nursies, hon."
He said, "Okay," and that was it.
He's three years and four months old. Oddly enough, that's exactly the same age Gavin was when he (Gavin) self-weaned.
I've been pregnant or nursing since December 2003, which is a little over seven and a half years. Some people describe the end of nursing as sad or bittersweet. For me it is neither. I'm relieved I did right by both of them, and glad that it's finally all over. Seven and a half years is a long time to have your body physically in intimate service to others, and I'm happy to have it be all mine again. (And really, it wasn't just Gavin and Connor that I nursed; I pumped and donated extra milk to two other babies as well.)
I did it, and I'm proud. And now it is done, and I'm glad. :)
