Do I even need to start analyzing what a bad idea this is?

The "gender stereotypes in toy marketing" is horrifying - but SO not surprising to me. Advertising in general is frighteningly subversive in the messages it sends and the way it is designed to alter the way you think, to turn you into a "good little consumer" - and the very BEST time to do that is when you are young and impressionable and easily molded into the consumer of tomorrow (who is actually just the consumer of yesteryear - why deal with change if you can prevent it?)
The worst part is that a lot of parents just LOVE it! They LOVE having their boys turned into "little men" and their girls turned into "little women", espousing all of the same outdated 1950's BS. If that sounds wrong, tell me how many (less-enlightened-than-yourself) parents would be absolutely appalled if their son wanted a doll, or their daughter wanted an action figure? They would freak out! (It's all heavily tied into keeping homophobia alive and well - purposeful or not, I can't really decide - which is doubly distressing to me.) And that just allows the marketing machine to mold boys and girls into the same consumers that companies already know exactly how to market to. *shudders*
It's not something I really have to think about a lot, but... if I ever end up involved in the raising of children in whatever capacity, I am definitely all about removing as much media influence and marketing re-programming as I possibly can.
Good luck!
