BTW, forgot to add - the most infuriating thing about all this, to me, is that I highly doubt that he actually intends to build any subways at all. I strongly suspect he's just using the prospect of building subways as an excuse to dump Transit City so that he doesn't come off looking quite so much like he's completely anti-transit.

He got elected on a platform of cutting costs, by constantly harping on how Toronto is "broken", has no money, can't afford this or that, etc. (even though a lot of that was utter bullshit). So I don't think he's likely to actually go ahead with building anything as expensive as a subway. Most likely, he'll go on about how much better subways are while he cancels Transit City, terminates all the contracts we've already committed to, scraps stuff we've already at least partially paid for, etc. -- and then, once that's over, "suddenly realize" (i.e. have actually known along) that oh gee, due to incurring all those penalties for breaking contracts and/or "wasting" money on the initial investment (which wouldn't have been wasted if he hadn't scrapped it), we can't afford the subway after all. Whoops, sorry about that! Really did want to build one, but you know, the city's broken/broke/can't-afford-anything, etc., so re-elect me and maybe I'll fix it next time!

BTW, seems like I spoke to soon about not getting a response - apparently it just came in today, even though I wrote quite a while back. Now, to formulate my reply...

Sorry to add yet one more thing... misslynx December 10 2010, 19:02:57 UTC
...But a horrible possibility just occurred to me: that maybe he'll use all these e-mails expressing concern about how expensive subways are as ammunition to scrap that plan once he finishes scrapping TC. Because he'll be able to point to them as evidence that clearly Torontonians think we can't afford a subway, even though the original point was to try and save TC, not to scrap the only public transit investment he's apparently willing to make. So he'll basically be able to doubly screw us while looking like he's being responsive.

I think I sent mine about two weeks ago, so I guess they're just now getting around to sending out their copypasta responses to everyone who emailed them about it.

You know, before he got elected, I saw a lot of people defending him in the Toronto Star's website comments. Suddenly those supporters have clammed up and few people are defending him now. Hm, I wonder why?
