I'm so disappointed

On the sign advertising that the dollhouse place needed a builder, they neglected to mention that this would involve a lot of carrying 40-to-70 lb boxes up and down stairs. The owner also neglected to mention that during the interview ( Read more... )

It was a matter where after carrying a few loads downstairs, I was seeing spots and so light-headed I was afraid I might pass out. As long as I can pace myself (and I told her this) - for example, bring a few loads downstairs, then sit down and complete a shipping order, then bring a few loads downstairs, etc - I'd be okay. But I don't have the strength or stamina to carry load after load after load after load of boxes that are more than half my own body weight up and down stairs. Unfortunately it sounds like on delivery days, that's pretty much all you're doing, because you have to unload the truck as fast as possible. So pacing myself is not a possibility. It's a straight-up strength/stamina issue, and I don't have either the strength or stamina.

I'm guessing that if I had a disability, they wouldn't say outright that they weren't giving me the job due to that, but you just wouldn't get the job. As she put it, it's a small shop and everybody has to be "one of the boys" - i.e., capable of doing a strong man's tasks.

She said that she usually asks about it during an interview, but forgot during mine. I did suggest that she add it to the sign advertising for a builder, because honestly, I wouldn't have applied if I'd known that it involved a lot of heavy lifting.

Hopefully she'll take my advice and add it to their ad so that nobody else runs into this particular issue. :/
