Y'know, that is illegal. If it originated from North America whoever sent it is totally convictable.
If there's any contact information on there (and presumably there is if it's an attempt to scam stupid people out of $3000) then you could report that to the police and land them in all sorts of fun.
I'd be shocked if it originated from within North America. Scams like that tend to be Nigerian-based (although I hear an increasing number of scams are originating in Rwanda these days). I can take a look at the IP, but I'm sure it'll be spoofed all to hell.
It didn't strike me as a 419 scam up front, but you're right about that. Oddly, a friend of mine got a couple of harassing prank calls along those lines, which she reported to local police & that has led to hilarity in the community, which is probably why I gave it more credence than I have in the past.
Normally there is something traceable in these e-mails because they need you to be able to send the money to them. Back in the day (lets say 5 years ago), the RCMP had an e-mail address for people to forward them to. I guess they've given up on that approach 'cos it wasn't on the top 10 Google links.
LOL! I guess they weren't having much success with it, since I see the first emails were demanding $80k total, and slowly that's dropped... by now the spammer just wants $6k. ;)
I'm kind of sorry mine didn't have a tagline like "the seer, killer, saver and damager." like one of the spammers on that page, because that's even more lolz.
My mom got one...in 2007 or 2008. It was a woman screaming "mother mother help me, mother!" but my sister is in the US (and doesn't speak great Spanish...), and I was up stairs being a bum, totally ok.
She thought for a split second it might be my cousin, (we kept the phone line when we bought the house) so she called my aunt to be sure my cousin was ok-thankfully she was and we were luckily (?) just part of a rash of phone calls from Mexico City that were looking for easy meal tickets.
