OK, I'm really behind my paperlegends reading, but there's the Rugby World Championship coming and I'm trying to see all the test matches and WHY ARE SOME OF THEM AT THE SAME TIME? and of course the TriNations matches are at the same time too, so you have to find a way to follow three matches at a time. (I did! France-Irlande on the telly, New Zealand-South Africa on the computer and Scotland-Italy thanks to a live score on my cellphone...) So I spend all my Fridays and Saturdays watching rugby and not reading, and when I'm back home, I want to read about SPORT. And guess what? There is NO rugby!AU in the Merlin fandom!! It's outrageous!
Anyway, in the meantime, I'm reading footie!AU because even if I'm not that much of a football fan, I like it enough and the fics are great...
Here's a Merlin/Arthur Modern AU, then:

When the FIFA, supported by the football legend Uther Pendragon, introduces the "Parent Rule" which allows only players with same-nationality parents and born on the territory to play for their national team, Merlin doesn't think his unknown father is going to be of any relevance. But then is he called to play along Arthur at Manchester United...
This story is making you become a footie fanatic for a while. You truly are out for Uther's and Nimueh's blood, and cheer and boos along with the OC!supporters. Talking about OCs, Owain (who stands for Lancelot) and Gwain and Sir Alex and even Tristiano Ronaldo (YES!) are absolutely amazing. Morgana is a professional singer, Gwen her PA, Sophia her rival (but she is no match for Morgana's greatness, of course :p) and all of them are amazing and very IC while being nicely adapted to this AU settings. Uther is infuriating, Nimueh (it's the last name of a male player... You het used to it very quickly) even more (and if you have ever watched a football match with Italy/Spain/Portugal you will know his type). But more importantly, Merlin and Arthur are AMAZING! There's not the whole "omg-I-love-him-but-I-can't" angsty-Ust thingy, and it's a relief, because you can focus on a relationship where people don't only live inside their heads. A real good fic.
