So, in the last 2 days I spent my work shift reading
Kim Wong Keltner's The Dim Sum of All Things. ayuminemoto, Remember when we first saw the book when we spent so many hours around downtown's Indigo? yes, it's that very book, I bought with Adri at the beginning of this month. With an adorable cover of a platter of all things Chinese including a centered panda, and sides with mahjong tiles, fans and teapots, it was most definitely eye catching. The back of the book was quite appealing too with a list of questions including have you ever wondered: whhy Asians love "Hello Kitty"... Then you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll realize this book is better than a Broadway production of Cats when you read scenes that include:... an authentic Chinese bacquet where Number One Son shows off his language skills by speaking "Chinglish"...
The book was honest to God made of major LOLs. At first, I thought it was going to be a collection of short stories that will somehow weave itself into one tale in a similar fashion as Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club but it wasn't. Definitely not your typical ABC tale as for once; it actually features a protagonist that speaks Lord would have it OMG Cantonese. I feel that I was able to relate a lot more than some of the other tales I've read in my repertoire of Asian history featuring an ABC. Thus comes my rant about the book and I pray that it remains as spoiler free as possible.
- For one thing, I can understand when they use the Chinese a lot more because I know the words.
- I laughed so much in the first 10 pages that I already knew this book was going to be good.
- if you're looking for a more Chinese culture geographically speaking of China, this is not the book.
- I must admit, this does somewhat feel like a bit of a romantic comedy as there is a tad of romance. However, the focus is on Lindsey Owyang who learns she's not as whtiewashed as she really thought.
- I really enjoyed how it used more present day things that makes the jokes all the funnier.
- The characterizations of the protagonist felt well paced and it wasn't like a sudden boom of OMG I'M CHINESE. In many ways, she's still very whitewashed, but she's come to appreciate her two worlds a bit more I guess you could say.
- She has inner mind moments that are so worth the read and really gives the feeling that you can imagine this yourself.
Overall, this book is a great book to read for good comedy that you say OMG that happened to me or OMG I can so see that!
On a final note, it must be a sin to taste this damn good... People, yo must fully try a cappuccino torte i'm trying to remember the brand, but I'm sure ti's nto the cheap kind isnce it's made with real cream... IT IS SO SINFULLY DELICIOUS!!!
