A couple of days away from hitting the sixth month mark here in Iraq, and though it's great to know I am half done, the fact I must endure another six months, most of it in Iraq's unbearable heat, just takes a lot out of my enthusiasm. But, as a lot of my buddies here say jokingly " Now we're on the air force tour ", a reference to the fact that air force guys only pull 6 month tours as opposed to our 12 month tours.
6 Months is a long time, especially when you go out virtually every day, sometimes doing more than 1 mission a day. Let me recount the incidents my platoon of 28 scouts and 8 vehicles has encountered thus far.
12 roadside bomb detonations witnessed
8 Roadside bombs detonated on our vehicles
1 injured soldier
1 Rocket Propelled Grenade and small arms fire attack
Numerous house raid operations ( too many to count )
2 weapons caches found
8 insurgents killed
10 IEDs found before detonation
I'm just thankful everyones alright, there have been a few deaths in the batallion but thankfully not in the most overworked and flexible platoon, the 1-8 INF Scouts. 6 months left.
