Sounds like to me a bit of personal prejudice on the professor's part. Contractions in the English language, are an accepted form of communication. Not sure what planet he's from, but apparently he doesn't understand Galactic Basic... ;p

Actually, that is the norm for college; you don't want to use contractions in an essay because its considered "too casual." Academic writing is more specific that way.
My sophmore year, I wrote a paper in a funky font that just seemed perfect for what I was writing about. It was definitely NOT the usual Times New Roman nor Arial; I forget what I used, but it was definitely more hand-writing style in appearance.
I was marked down a full grade, to a B!, because of it. I didn't know that it wasn't allowed either, for all that it fit the flair. LOL
