January 20, 2001 - when George W. Bush was sworn in as president of the U.S.
Oh sure, most people will say 9/11, but this really sets the precedent to all of these events: 9/11, water torture, wiretaps, the slow response to Katrina, the U.S.'s image going down the tube. 9/11 lead to Bush being elected again out of hope that he would do well, but the way he handled everything else in his presidency gave him a bad reputation and an urge in millions of people to elect someone not like him (a liberal Democrat who promises change).
