Iron Man: The Review

Jun 15, 2008 00:49

Yesterday I watched Iron Man and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I thoroughly enjoyed it. Usually I tend to nitpick on plot points and characterization, but I really felt that the movie covered all of these bases and more.

Summary of the plot: Tony Stark is a playboy billionaire industrialist who is captured in Afghanistan while demonstrating one of his weapons. He escapes and builds a metal-alloy suit to destroy the weapons that have fallen into the wrong hands and also fights crime. There's a lot more to the movie I could mention, but that would be spoiling the whole movie. :) There were several times where I would spot a plot flaw, but then it was explained in the scene afterwords and all was forgiven.

The characters:

Robert Downey Jr. is excellent as Tony Stark. He manages to balance smart-ass playboy and intelligent sensitive engineer, and the emotional depth that he displays is impressive. There were several scenes I found touching, mainly scenes between Tony and his secretary, Pepper Pots. Also, I like the fact that Downey didn't portray him as a serious, brooding superhero with bucket loads of angst. That gets annoying really quick. I really want a superhero who can find humor in his situation and overcome his problems logically. Seems I found him, yeah? I am already excited for the next two sequels, if only to watch his character develop (and for his sarcasm too.)

I really liked Gwyneth Paltrow in this one. She plays Virginia "Pepper" Pots, Stark's secretary and potential love interest. I enjoyed the fact that while Pepper can be sexy and confident, she can also be a little clumsy and unsure of her affections for Stark., which really endeared her to me. Again, the actors make their characters relatable and Paltrow is no exception. She didn't portray Pepper as a dominatrix, but as an average secretary who is unsure of whether to pursue her feelings for her boss. I am looking forward to watching her in the next two movies, as well.

Lt. Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes is a character I'd like to see fleshed out more. He is essentially a military guy and very straightforward about his opinions on Stark's decisions, but is still his friend and confidant. Terrence Howard does justice to Rhodes, making him reliable and responsible, in contrast to Downey's Stark. There's some speculation on whether he is going to don the Iron Man suit, since in the comics Stark becomes an alcoholic and Rhodes becomes War Machine for awhile. Another great character I'd like to see in the upcoming movies.

I don't have enough space to put the remaining people on here, but take it from me, they were fantastic. Jon Favreau did an excellent job bringing this onscreen and I hope that he will continue making the Iron Man trilogy, as well as delving into the organization S.H.I.E.L.D. Well, off to sleep!
