Wow!

I spent the evening at a local bar at a party hosted by the GLBT Political Caucus watching the election returns. What a night! Funniest moment of the evening? The gays went absolutely bat-shit crazy when the cameras found Oprah in the audience! Everyone was milling about chatting and drinking, but they all turned simultaneously and shouted "OPRAH!!!!" at the same time. Cracked my ass up. When McCain came out and gave his concession speech, complimentary champagne was served to the entire (full) bar to celebrate the "End of an Error". I am so proud to finally have a president that I can support, who can give a speech without sounding like an imbecile, and might actually have a chance at repairing our international standing. All that excitement was tempered by the realization that my home state, albeit with much meddling and interference from those who had no business there, had decided to eliminate the right to marry for same-sex couples. While the legal fight will continue (the US constitutional prohibition on ex-post facto laws might protect those who are already married, and the inherent disconnect between Prop 8 and the equal-treatment provision in the California constitution also might be useful), the fact that so many in California voted for Prop 8 is truly saddening.
