So I finished watching the first episode of Shinkenger. While it was nothing new and nothing special, it was good. By now, it really takes something to surprise us with Sentai, so good is a good start. I'm going to continue watching and am looking forward to seeing how this one develops. I'm not going to spoiler-ize the stuff below as it's nothing that is not already in the publicity shots/wiki etc. I'll cut it though, so as not to spam all for increased loading.
The characters are all Sentai-standards. Everything you need to know about Shinken Yellow is summarized below.
Yes - yellow is the color of this season's cute and ditzy one. I can't decide if I find her ears pretty, or pretty freaky. I guess time will tell. Either way, you can *feel* the slashers getting ready to put these two together.
Final thing to say about the girls, is the distracting not-nipples. Behold!
Poor costume design has led to these strange fabric "bubbles" that wrinkle away in a very distracting place. It's difficult not to look, in a similar way to how it's difficult not to look for Trini's breasts in MMPR.
The bad guy of for the series (or, at least for now) has Cthulhu as his jester. Or possibly chief strategist, I couldn't tell.
Maybe he's filling both roles, I'm not sure. Either way you've got to be a bad ass to have Cthulhu in any sort of subservient role. I can only hope that the rest of the Lovecraft mythos makes an appearance.
On to my favorite moment of the show - Namco Bandai product placement!
Shinken Green is the joker of the series and apparently into Tekken 6. However, one gets the impression that if Namco Bandai had released anything else of note recently, Shinken Green would be more interested in that. When are they going to just own up and make "Bandai Ranger". Or better yet, just go all out (like the Psionic 6 with Glucafizz) and actually tattoo the faces of the actors. Then all we could see would be the logo, or the toys.
Don't mistake this rant for actual anger. I love it.
I'm not going to post any more pictures as the net will soon be flooded with them. I liked the foot soldiers, but the first monster was a bit lame. It was difficult to get a good shot of them because the action scenes were very dynamic. And with everyone swinging swords, it's a lot more violent than Sentai has been in a while. A couple of bystanders get killed. I can see that disappearing when Sentai changes to Power Rangers. If RPM does well enough to keep the franchise going that is....
Well, that's all for now. Shinkenger! Can't wait for next weeks episode! Although I'll have to as we're staying in Plymouth and seeing friends. Becky and I can support each other on this one though - she'll be missing Battleshorts Galactica....
