Clicky So, KFC has added beef burgers to the menu, here in Korea. It's a test to see how well it works in case another bird-flu pandemic flares up and the world's chickens all die. I *need* to make every effort to try this before it's withdrawn. Otherwise I'll never forgive myself.
Beef burgers! In KFC! It's like the fucking end-times!
Edit: To use better picture.
Edit2: Okay, so I just got back from KFC and I can now share some more details of this craziness. The menu adds the BeefMaxx, the GrillMaxx and two "snacker" burgers, which are tiny like a mini fillet burger, I think. The GrillMaxx is some kind of grilled meat thing, with a hash brown, something that looks like bacon and then salad. I went with the BeefMaxx because it seemed to be the focus of the advertising. The 'set' (meal, as we call it in the U.K.), comes with only a drink. No fries. I'm not sure why, as it is as expensive as the other set meals for the larger burgers (like the tower burgers), but there's no hash brown and it's not huge or anything. Hmm.
As to the BeefMaxx, I don't think KFC are going to corner the beef market any time soon. It was interesting to note that out of everyone I could see, and it was reasonably busy, I was the only one trying anything from the new menu. The burger is your standard re-constituted patty. Despite the pictures (above and in store), the bun was about 1.5 times the size of the burger. And the middle was all sunken from the excess sauce and the weight of the patty, forming a strange bready-cave. The salad (I got a red pepper, unlike the advertising which is all yellow peppers) was fresh, as it always is in Korea, but the sauce had drowned it and made it a bit floppy. The sauce was thick but very wet, full of pickle chunks and pieces of something I couldn't identify. I think that they were the chunks you can see under the patty in the picture. Well, mine were in with the sauce, and it was difficult to tell which side, up or down, the sauce started out on. It was, as expected, slightly spicy, but nowhere near the level of spice of a zinger - tangy (?) might be a better word.
I hate to give Colonel Sanders a bad mark, it there really wasn't anything special to this burger. KFC is going to have to try a *lot* harder if it is serious about taking on the other chains in the beef arena.
MEAT: **/***** - (a least it didn't have any gristle in it)
SALAD: ***/***** - (fresh but spoiled by the sauce)
SAUCE: */***** - (too much of it, couldn't tell what was in it, little bland)
BREAD **/***** - (odd shape, did not fit the meat but was fresh)
Total score: **/***** - (C+, try harder!)
