Today,
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by
Catherynne M. Valente is born as a beautiful print book with
enchanting illustrations by Ana Juan. I have so much to say about this book that began as a crowdfunded novel,
won the Andre Norton Award, and then wended its way to today. You'll have to wait for my proper review, but here's a snippet I've written previously:
"The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland is one of those books I wish I could have grown up reading. I can feel, even now, how its soap-golem and wild velocipede migrations and Worsted Wood would have merged with my inner topography completely, uniting my inner self with the worthy heroine September, whose impetuosity is matched only by her compassion. And while I could not grow up with September and Ell, the wyvern who is also a library, and Saturday, who must be wrestled for wishes - I can grow old with them. This Fairyland is a cathedral of the heart, where all us Ravished children can meet and dance, and feel our mother's swords in all its different weights fit so familiarly into our hands. No child should be denied this."
And, of course, I bring you icons:
