I think so. The curses...some of them are harmless and silly, but some of them bring out the worst in people. I've gotten lucky so far, though I don't know how long that'll last.

I'm pretty sure. The longer you're here, the easier it is to tell when there's a curse and when there isn't. If you aren't affected, anyway. If you are...you don't always know.
