Chapter 15

Late winter, 1985

By the end of February, Ennis began to wonder if he’d soon be looking for another job after all. Carl Scrope had been in the hospital off and on for several months, and the ranch’s bookkeeper Carolyn, who he usually saw only once every few months if that, was in the foreman’s office more and more often. Men he had not ( Read more... )

I so appreciate your very adult take on Ennis's life after Jack. Ennis finally being brave, defending himself and his love for Jack with Ken and then taking that last hugh step and calling David. I'm curious as to why you didn't post this seperately. I would hate other readers to be deprived of this. take care.

Thank you both for that feedback, I'd frankly never thought of that aspect in posting chapters. Chapter 14 was finished about 3 weeks ago, but I held it until I had all three chapters done as it seemed to me they kind of went together. But that's the reason feedback is so important - that "third eye" can show you things you'd never have seen otherwise.

That's making me rethink how I posted on bbmslash and Wranglers this time out -- just Chapter 16 posted plus links to previous chapters, I'd not done it that way before, but maybe I should go back and post the first two as well. Will think about that - it would sure give the impression that I'm writing this story backwards. :)

Thanks for reading and double-thanks for commenting!

but I gotta agree with rainatimes--I only "found" this chapter because I automatically check back several chaps. when something hasn't updated in a bit to refresh my memory. I'm glad I found it. I see that Jack is continuing to work on getting Ennis to accept his own queerness and keep David company--letting him know that Jack knows no one will replace him in Ennis's heart. Ennis gets the courage to speak up for Javier and doesn't deck the a*&hole suggesting he might be gay for doing so--he's made progress.

Did you know that the first couple of paragraphs are almost exactly like a couple in the previous chapter? (Think it's the one just before this.)

Jenny,

The reply above as it was intended for both of you - I couldn't figure out how to get the notification for two people in one post. But two people making similar observations means I need to rethink how I'm posting chapters.

The first two paragraphs being so similar were an experiment - both are a continuation of Ennis' second winter without Jack.

Oh you know this time around the two chapters being similar to begin with made me think I had already read this one so I went on to 16 then wondered how come I'd missed the phone call with David...

Like I said in a previous comment we are walking at Ennis's pace and now we have come to the time when he steps off the cliff into the unknown it is all very natural, not jarring, not a surprise just a believable extension of all that has gone before. Like Ennis says, creeping little by little...

I can't think how terrible it must be for you to hear homophobics talking like that about AIDS and queers and to know they are talking about you and the man you loved for twenty+ years, the man who died at the hands of men who just took the words a step further.

I almost feel euphoric at him making the phone call.

I'm slowly working my way through this story again before reading the chapters you just added, remembering why I love it. Looking at the posting dates sends me back to the time before I'd even started writing myself, and what I felt during my most intense year of Brokeback fever. It seems like such a long time ago. When you posted chapter 1 my daughter was 14 and now she's in college!

This morning I woke up to the news of the NY vote on gay marriage. What a lot of changes in the world since you started writing this! (Like, now I'm reading this on a device that I can carry in my purse.) I'm not sure how long it will take me to catch up to the latest installment, and I truly hope you won't let so much time go by before the next one. Your writing is a real pleasure to read. Thanks so much for not giving up on this fic. It deserves to be completed.
