I'm not and never have been a Peter/Olivia shipper so I did get a little perverse pleasure out of the fact that their relationship is a little rocky. I was a little disappointed that Peter COULDN'T tell, even after naming the changes to Alt!Olivia. Just from a romantic POV, you'd like to think that love conquers all and Peter should sense the difference if he truly loves her. Realistically, it's probably not that simple and I admire Olivia for attempting to have that rational reaction to everything. But even other world Charlie could kind of tell that Olivia was not his Olivia.
However, I think Olivia was unfair to Peter, comparing him to the marionette guy. That doll the crazy guy created was a mindless, childlike, shell. It wouldn't take much to know that she wasn't herself. Also, Peter saying that his relationship with Olivia was new and different... wow that was brilliant writing and it really helped me to understand even more how Peter could NOT know - along with not wanting to know that Olivia was gone as the woman who lived with the shape shifter didn't want to know and explaining things away.
So I sympathized with Peter and my heart went out to him, even if it made me think that he didn't love her enough. And you are right about Peter telling Olivia. That was an amazing show of character for Peter. Because he deeply loves Olivia. I mean, she brought him back from the other world. And he had so much... hope and joy with her... alt!Livia... but he thought it was Olivia. And to not only have the betrayal of alt!Livia posing as Olivia but at the same time potentially destroy his chance of real hope and joy with Olivia, that's huge.
But wow! Rape? That... just... it's beyond heartbreaking. It's nauseating. I was starting to entertain the idea that there might be something to Olivia's insecurities. That maybe Alt!Olivia and Peter are better suited or something. But NO WAY, Peter has been completely violated. You are so right about that. And it really has given me a reality check regarding Peter.
After some of the things Astrid said in Marionette, Peter's comment about the difference in their relationship and this post, I feel that Olivia might love Peter enough to choose him after she's had time to heal from her own violation at the hands of Alt!Livia and Walternate. Great post. I see the tragedy so clearly now, and even though I don't ship them, I'm certainly rooting for them to come through this and try again.
