Completely and utterly agreed with your assessment. All along I was joking about how Peter was thinking with the wrong head but all along if you look at how he behaves with altolivia when he is worried-scared, hugging her and all the little touches such as nuzzling and kissing her head which is all the tiny ways you show someone you care or them. You know that it is not going to end good. And it doesn't- he basically gets a phonecall,(kissing alt!Olivia on the head for the millionth time )and then is robbed of all security and peace of mind. And then think of how desperate that is to have walked into a trap with no way of making it up..
And then Marionette and that last scene....God, basically Olivia is a wounded animal, striking out while Peter can only sit there and take it. He feels he can't defend himself and can only sit there wordlessly as he thinks it is the least he can do to really listen and try to respect Olivia.
He also thought he was in the middle of a relationship with Olivia and those feelings can't turn off like a tap. Think if someone you physically had kissed and seen every day and been in a committed relationship just out of the blue turned to you and said "I don't want to be with you."?!?! And in Peter's case he understands and knows he can't defend himself against anything because it is true and this is as outspoken and open as Olivia is going to get.
Personally, that last scene was painful for me and I was aching for Peter to say anything, just to somehow lay out his point of view. I think the writers were actually smart in Peter not saying anything yet us viewers have seen what he was going through -the relationship with altlivia and how happy he was and the immediate aftermath-and we as surrogates were thinking in our heads (or in my case screaming at the tv)during his silence at Olivias questions (all the questions the audience was asking in the past few weeks)all the reasons why indeed he fell for altlivia's act. Because he was in love, and thought Olivia was happier for being in live (because love changes everything, as all the books and movies tell us) and Peter said about himself once that he was a 'frustrated romantic'. I wanted to give Peter a hug during that scene 'I'm sorry'-to open air and to nobody. That just is great writing wrapped up in brilliant acting.Joshua Jackson and Anna Torv are just doing great acting out of this heavy duty drama on their plates and they are just...doing it justice.
Sorry for the rant but I could talk about this endlessly!
