On society and need

So, one of the questions I keep getting at the new job is whether or not we'll carry the new Starbucks size, the Trenta. It astounds me that so many people want a drink of this proportion. I remember joking once after buying a soda that I could drown in it because it was the size of my face. I laughed it off at the time and then, of course, drank it. That was in 2001 or 2002. I remember specifically because I was living with my first grouping of roommates from college. I was walking home on a hot day and stopped into a Chinese restaurant near the dorm because I was thirsty. In ordering a drink, I didn't expect to be given a bucket, but it was cheap, so I took it anyway.

The Big Gulp, the Trenta, all of these amaze me. I've been guilty of drinking a Big Gulp before, especially when my soda addiction was at its worst, but usually it was a matter of having something to drink all day and a matter of staying cool with tons of ice. (I measured once out of curiosity - I tended to put so much ice into the drink that I was not even able to fit a can of soda into the cup.)

Is it caffeine addiction? I've known plenty of people who wake up and "need" their daily fix, be it coffee or soda. More and more, I'm meeting people that get up and drink a soda for breakfast simply because they want the caffeine.  I know at one point I did think that I was truly addicted to caffeine, but over the years I've discovered that very little caffeine is required, and I tend to get enough in various other foods that I eat that caffeinated soda is unneccesary (which, unfortunately, doesn't mean that I don't drink it).

I guess, like many of my other entries, this has no point, but I can't see a point to a drink like the Trenta. Who needs a drink that's bigger than their stomach?

need, brain, food
