Isabel Russo follows the same routine every single day. After her shift at the diner has come to a close she walks across the street, carefully evading motorists and bicyclists and pedestrians as she makes her way down into the subway station in downtown Boston. Once on the train, she pushes headphones into her ears and fumbles with her iPod until the soothing low dulcimer of Etta James drowns out the sound of busy commuters sharing the cramped space with her. She works hard to ignore the high school kids chatting loudly, the men in their suits, reds and blues of ties blending into the dull grays and blacks. She avoids panhandlers and street musicians as she desperately tries to lose herself in the music, it's her peace of mind, her only reprieve from a life so mundane she's afraid she might be sick on it.
Once the train comes to a halt at her stop she pushes her way through the din crowd and makes her way back to the surface of the street, her iPod still blaring. This is just another day in the life of Isabel Russo, and although she wishes desperately for something to change, for something bigger to happen, she doesn't count on it.
If there's one thing to be said about life, when you're least expecting a surprise is when you're most likely to get one. The truth is, Isabel has long given up on the idea that there's a greater purpose for her. Once upon a time she'd had a dream about Broadway, bright lights featuring her on center stage, singing and dancing and winning audiences over everywhere. The dreams of someone who can still afford to have them, but once college ends the real world begins and dreams get crushed faster than Isabel can say 'would you like some more coffee?'
