Didn't they already tag the South Africans and the Australians for this kind of fixing a few years ago? I thought the reverberations went around the Commonwealth back then.

Modern world? Haven't you ever heard of the Black Sox?

Most of that was either unproven or fairly innocuous. Ricky Ponting got a fine because he gave a pitch report to a bookie, meaningful information for the bookie, but not really corrupting for the player.

I just remember reading about it and figured that if it was a big enough deal to get the attention of the US sports media it must be a big deal. I mean, cricket?

Quite possibly , allegations were made, that only hit the sports page. This time, people have been caught in a 'sting' operation. the press have planted someone pretending to be ' interested' and money changed hands. All on tape , and tapes handed to the cops.

This has hit the front pages of the London Times, among many other newspapers.

Seriously, no. I understand that the re sox are a baseball team, posibly from Boston , but that is about all I know of basesball.

Eight members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox, one of baseball's greatest teams, conspired with a group of gamblers and gangsters to throw the World Series. Almost 100 years later this act of either defiance or treachery (depending on your sympathies) still inspires people, including the movies Field of Dreams, The Natural and Eight Men Out.

Cronje was banned for life, then died in mysterious circumstances.

You are essentially correct about the South African team: the Aussies may be a different matter.

No-one in the modern age would ever pay the England team to lose. I wonder why?

Thanx. I am tempted to say that we shall need it - but we don't do so badly in Rugby these days.
