Domestic "saving jobs!" policy, yes. It is a disaster to attempt to game markets and pick winners and losers like this when liberals do it (Obama and the GM bail out), it is a disaster when conservatives do it (Bush and the steel industry tariffs) it will be a disaster for whatever it is Trump is pretending to be with Carrier and every other company coming down the pike. If you subsidize failure, all you get is more failure. All it means to me that Carrier AC systems are still going to be made in America is that they will be more expensive than they would otherwise be if they were being produced in Mexico. Color me selfish, but I'd rather have a cheaper air conditioner and some money in my pocket.
As far as the Taiwan/China kerfuffle, I think people are making more out of this than is reasonable. It isn't much more than a marker he is putting down that indicates to the Chinese that he is not going to negotiate from weakness. If they don't like it, well, they don't have to like it. Its a tactic. If people are a little off balance about America's intentions, I don't see that as necessarily a 100% bad thing.
