Yep. Back when my husband was at university, working his way through his school was a feasible alternative. That's not the case for students at his school today.
Well, sooner or later this crisis will come to a head, as you've indicated. Then, either the present University system will break down and have to change, or…America will have no non-upper class American educated doctors, lawyers, or professional folk. I suppose that student debt defaulters might to sell themselves into actual debt-bondage: so a new sort of educated institutional slavery. For example: doctor 'X' still has five years to work for this hospital organisation to pay of his debt before he/she is free to try to make money for him/herself.
It gives Libertarianism a new meaning. The liberty to sell oneself into debt-slavery.
America will have no non-upper class American educated doctors, lawyers, or professional folk More like America will have few non-upper class American educated PhDs in philosophy, dead languages, sexology, basket weaving, etc. Smart, talented, hard working people who pursue useful degrees will probably be less affected.
Wouldn't the absence of government assistance in university loans create a situation where only a privileged segment of society would have access to higher education?
OK, let me put the question this way. What policies do you think would amend the situation in a meaningful way, without creating the situation I mentioned above?
I'm not sure we can adequately discuss this topic (which needs to be discussed on a far more public platform) without considering demographics. But that's just me.
