It showed he was condescending for no reason, for one. For another, it showed he didn't understand Romney's point. For third, it showed he didn't understand how the military works, while claiming that he did.

Yes, he was saying that the Navy had less ships than the Navy says it needs, which includes by type, not just number. I think he was more saying that Obama wouldn't do anything fix that problem (which does assume it's a problem) and that he would, rather than blaming Obama for getting them to that point. Obama could have easily just said that he had increased the number of ships in the Navy while he was in office and that they were still doing that, and that would have been a perfect response. Instead, he went into a personal attack to imply that Romney had no idea what a submarine or an aircraft carrier were. Thus, he shows the three things I said above.
