Obama gives gays the bone

I'm sorry, I meant he throws them a bone:

Same-sex partners to get fed benefits

Apparently some pro-gay fundraisers withdrew their support from a June 25th DNC event after the June 12 Justice Department brief that defended the Defense of Marriage Act. So Obama's like "Oh hai" and is quietly trying to push this through now.

I think the pressure needs to continue until Obama repeals Don't Ask Don't Tell and takes a stronger stance in allowing gays to have the same rights and privileges that everyone else has. I'm struggling to understand his stance on DADT. Does he want a law repealing it so that the next administration that is hostile to gay rights can't so easily overturn it? This is the only explanation that makes any sense.

I guess if he were to use an Executive Order to end it then many in Congress may balk at making it law, they'd say it wasn't necessary and don't want to go on record as supporting gay rights (which despite the recent shift to toward the left in the US is still just above supporting Muslims which in turn is above supporting atheists).

I think now is the time for the LGBT community and their supporters to turn up the heat, both on Obama and Congress. No more stalling tactics, no more bullshit. If they want the support of this normally strong Democratic voting bloc then they need to produce results. Boycott all donations until DADT is repealed and we start seeing a more tangible support for gay marriage.

obama, civil rights, gay rights, democrats
