Like wise the whole concept of the government as a protector/parent is predicated on the idea that the majority of citizens are unable to function as an adults.
People are stupid. The less their stupidity can ruin it for the rest of us, the better.

Then why they hell are we allowing these people to control what is - literally - the biggest stockpile of the most dangerous weapons known to man, which are capable of rendering the Earth nearly inhabitable to human life for centuries? Call me irrational if you will, but I don't think that's the smartest move there.
There's not really any other choice, is there? Someone has to look after them, and most people are stupid, so...

That would be an option if other nations didn't have centralized structures and their own nuclear missiles. I also think people (and corporations!) could put in two or three missile silos for a few hundred million dollars.
You know, those two options have the same expected value of $50...
Sure, the political class attracts stupid and malicious people, but so does the business class. The difference is that I have a more direct say in who becomes part of the political class, and the political class also attracts people interested in public service rather than money.

Because we have no choice. 'None of the above' isn't a valid option, despite what Brewster's Millions tells you.
Also I don't recall saying I'm qualified to run the country, so that's a meaningless projection you're making.

I think you're conflating the legislative branch with the judicial branch with your cookie jar analogy.
The people making the laws are not the ones in charge of enforcing them. The whole separation of powers thing is a good example of being protected from stupid people by making sure no individual in government is a Judge Dredd.

You keep saying this. I'm still not following how imposing certain restrictions = 'giving stupid people a lot of power'.
