Author rec: themantlingdark

I've spent the past week on a Thor/Loki fic binge, reading the entire catalogue of themantlingdark. Their writing reminds me very much of Thamiris' writing from Smallville fandom: lush, sensual, romantic, poetic, and emotionally over-the-top. Lovely stuff, and some of it quite long, too.

One of the things I appreciate most about themantlingdark's stories is the author's unflinching examination of the taboo of incest: how scary it is for Loki and Thor to acknowledge and act on their romantic and sexual attraction to each other, and the emotional toll that it takes to stay in a relationship that no one would understand or approve.

This is the story that introduced me to themantlingdark:

Boys (41929 words) by themantlingdark
Chapters: 9/9
Fandom: Thor (Movies), The Avengers (Marvel Movies)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Loki/Thor
Characters: Thor (Marvel), Loki (Marvel), Frigga (Marvel), Odin (Marvel)
Additional Tags: Sibling Incest, Alternate Universe - Human
Summary:
A Walt Whitman-inspired human AU.

I don't usually read Thor/Loki modern AUs, but I immediately fell in love with the gorgeous prose and the wonderful descriptions of childhood. I also really like the idea of Thor and Loki as twins. The reveal in Chapter 2 was extremely well-done and genuinely surprising.

For a more traditional Thor/Loki story, you can try this:

Lodestar (101996 words) by themantlingdark
Chapters: 21/21
Fandom: The Avengers (2012), Thor (Movies)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Loki/Thor
Characters: Thor (Marvel), Loki (Marvel), Odin (Marvel), Frigga (Marvel), Pepper Potts, Tony Stark
Additional Tags: Intersexuality, Brief Violence, References to Suicide, Sibling Incest, References to Homophobia, References to Torture, First Time
Series: Part 1 of Gemini
Summary:
Odin's punishment for Loki is a curse that can only be broken from within. Set immediately after The Avengers.

“Loki, my son, for your trespasses against the realms your answers shall be three. First: To open the way toward mending the peace that was broken between Asgard and Jotunheim, you shall aid in restoring the Bifrost. Second: That which by your actions you destroyed, or caused to be destroyed, on Midgard, you shall repair. For these you will have nine days... When the sun sets on the ninth day, you shall begin your third task. For your betrayal of your own heart, you shall be unknown to all the realms until you are known to yourself.”

This luxuriously long story is full of feelings and drama and angst, and it's the first in a series, the second part of which features mpreg. It's like it was tailor-made for me!
