Title: Perfectly Suited
Prompt: Matching Patronuses
Characters: James Potter, Lily Evans, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew
Words: 500
Author's Note: This drabble was written in response to a prompt regarding matching Patronuses. I found further inspiration from Merriam Webster's word of the day. The word was Beltane: the Celtic May Day festival. To the ancient Celts, May Day was a critical time when the boundaries between the human and supernatural worlds were removed and people needed to take special measures to protect themselves against enchantments. The Beltane fire festival originated in a spring ritual in which cattle were herded between two huge bonfires to protect them from evil and disease.

It was May 1st.
"So, today's the big day," Sirius announced with a clap of hands as he bounded down the last stair from the dormitories and whisked past Lily, who'd been waiting for them on the couch.
"Don't know why she made us wait this long," Peter grumbled as Lily swirled around the furniture grouping and into step with James, to the reception of his smile.
"She said all along she'd teach us Patronuses on the Beltane," Remus replied flatly.
"Now bands of evil fairies can't cart us off to the forest on Midsummer's Eve and have their way with us," Sirius mocked.
James leaned over and whispered into Lily's ear. "You can cart me off to the forest any day you like."
She immediately backhanded him, but a familiar smirk flickered at the edge of her lips as she pulled ahead to climb through the portrait hole.
"So wha'd'you think yours'll be, Lily?" Peter asked.
Lily rolled her eyes and groaned. "We've been through this a thousand times."
"A thousand and one," Remus muttered, readjusting his rucksack.
"It is not a fox." She glanced at James as they trotted down the stairs. "Or a rabbit," she added with a glare. "It's possible it's a cat, but somehow I don't think I share a Patronus with McGonogall…"
Thanks to good ol' Minerva the boys already had a very good idea what their Patronus forms would be-and they'd been eagerly awaiting unleashing them on the rest of the class.
"And if it were a badger, Sirius, I reckon I'd've been sorted Hufflepuff already."
"I told you I think it's a cat," he retorted. "I was just messing with you that day." His hair bounced elegantly as he rounded the next landing, making Lily wonder if her own was a mess of snarls. Fortunately, she was going out with James.
"And I don't think green eyes is enough to have in common with certain ferrets," she finished, trailing behind the Most Noble Head of Hair.
"So what d'you want it to be?" Remus asked.
She glanced up into her thoughts. "A robin," she answered finally.
"A robin?" Expressions twisted all around.
"Why?"
"Because they have excellent hearing." Her voice dredged a sarcastic tone to suggest she was onto them and the many things they mumbled when they thought she couldn't hear. "They're peaceful. They eat berries all winter…"
"And worms," James piped in.
Lily ignored him. "They sing, 'cheerily, cheer up, cheer up, cheerily, cheer up,' which I think the whole Wizarding world could use right now."
"Good point," said Remus.
"Their eggs are my favorite color-or close enough." She finished by shrugging. "And just because…"
"I think you're too fierce to be a robin," said James as they finally reached the Transfiguration corridor.
"Well, whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be as perfectly suited to me as that showy headdress you carry around, Potter." She flashed him a last loving smile over her shoulder before stepping into class.
