It's one of the older tomes, heavy with legacy and dust. He pries it from the shelf before choosing a page at random.
23-years-old, female. Failed.
He tries again.
19-years-old, male. Failed.
Failed. Failed. Failed.
It doesn't make for cheerful reading.
He finally pauses at 9-years-old, male. That one hurts, but only for a moment. He makes himself smile. “One down.”
He'll outlive them all. He's not going to accept anything less.
As he's leaving, Zelos tries not to think about the page they'll write for him. His own legacy to be left on the back shelf. He tries not to imagine the number - Years from now? Tomorrow?
He doesn't need to imagine the rest, though. On paper, all failures look the same.
That's probably a blessing.
