This is certainly not now Norma expected this night to begin.
She walks in doing her best not to be noticed. Her dress is a mess (despite her best efforts to fix it), her hair looks worse. She is obviously flustered, and is having a hard time hiding her embarassment.
It would be a bit of a while before Walter himself showed up. Really, he had told himself that this would be a waste of time, coming here. Unfortunately, curiosity was a hard beast to tame, much less silence.
So cue the blonde-haired jerkass showing up in this number, a blue tie hanging loosely from his hand. He hadn't bothered with it, shoving it into his pants pocket before sighing.
By the time Walter shows up, Norma has managed to straighten her dress up a little more. The paw prints have been almost completely dusted off, and though she can't hide the grass stains here and there, it doesn't look as terrible as it did before.
She sits alone in one of the chairs pushed against the walls of the ballroom, and looks pretty miserable.
At this point, Walter wasn't really interested in much -- maybe hide out at a table, munch on some of the food and then slink off into the night. Really, he wasn't one for these kinds of things.
Then he noticed Norma off to the side being a bit too quiet and frowned. He'd vaguely heard of her exploits from other students, and he was disconcerted. She was supposed to be the more boisterous of everyone else -- he'd been half-expecting her to be causing trouble, if nothing else.
Sighing, he decided to approach her, knowing full well that he would probably regret this. "What's with you, huh?"
She perked up when he spoke, and tried to smile. It was half hearted at best, but she laughed to give it a little more pep. "What's with me?" She tilted her head as she spoke, "What's with you?"
After a moment more of her fake smiling, she finally frowned. "It's a long story. The short version is that I'm spending my first prom--my only first prom!--smelling like dog and alone!" Clearly, Norma is upset.
Walter looked affronted, to put it mildly -- here he was trying to reach out and she had the gall to throw that question back in his face? He would've loved nothing more than to blast her with his magic and storm off, but he managed to restrain himself. Somehow.
Finally, after he listened to her he sighed. "That's gotta suck." Glancing towards the table, he soon spotted something and grabbed several of that item before glancing at Norma. "Hmph. You know if there's any showers nearby?"
Considering that this was a community center -- and that he could faintly smell the chlorine so typical of a swimming pool a few rooms down -- he would've been shocked if there were no showers here.
The expression that crossed her face clearly stated she had not thought of the showers. "Huh, that's not a terrible idea!" For the first time since their conversation started, she smiled.
"Thanks, uh..." She bit her lip, trying to remember his name. Any time they had met before had been an instant argument, and she wasn't sure they'd ever been introduced.
"No, you think?" Walter revealed the item he'd been collecting -- lemons -- and gave some to her. "If you don't have any soap or shampoo or something, use these, too. They'll help with clearing out whatever dog smell you have on you."
He paused, crossing his arms gruffly before he sighed and turned away. "...it's Delques. Walter Delques."
She took the lemons in hand, and smiled at him. "Wally, you're the greatest!" Her exclamation was punctuated by a laugh as she practically skipped away from the boy in white.
Clearly Norma's mood had brightened considerably, and she realized the night was not yet lost.
Walter frowned, long staring after her as she'd left for the showers. For the most part, his mind was screaming 'what have you done'. What he'd done, apparently, was make her just as boisterous and happy again. He cringed, wondering hat to expect now.
...well, if she was going to drag him around now, then he'd better be ready for it, at least. Time to raid that snack buffet.
