Title: Dream Without Rest
Artist/Author: ladydestinia
Characters/Pairings: Yuri +/ Flynn (I saw it more as brotherly based on personal experiences, but...)
Prompt: "It's time to train yourself to sleep alone again and it's so fucking hard."  (It's Time To Train Yourself, Richard Brautigan)
Rating: ... T for safeTy?
Warnings:  Angst, slight spoilers?  But mostly angst.

It was only after Yuri’s return (after Zaude, after the fall, after darkness veiled the sun) that Flynn began to have nightmares again.

Which was a little odd, now that he actually thought about it. Wasn’t Yuri’s return supposed to have settled his worries, soothed his fears, comforted his soul and all that rot? Apparently not.

There really wasn’t anything remotely frightening about them anyways; no blood, no gore, no screams of agony, just... Flynn would look and look and no matter where he turned (where are you, didn’t you promise, why did you leave?) he couldn’t find his friend-brother-other half. Which left the blond with darkness, coldness, and an emptiness he hadn’t felt since his parents had died. Back then, Yuri had been the one to drag Flynn out of his depression, but if Yuri vanished now...

The thought terrified Flynn, and maybe that was why he had started dreaming again.

In spite of everything, Yuri always managed to get out of the stickiest situations unscathed. It didn’t matter if he was going against bandits, monsters, or the insane Commandant of the Imperial Knights, he’d survive with nothing worse than a few scratches. It had caused Flynn to start thinking that maybe Yuri really could do anything.

Zaude forced him awake again. Oh, he never openly doubted that Yuri had lived, but it had been close. Until the longhaired man had reappeared on that battlefield, there had always been a niggling fear in the back of his mind. Things reached the point that he gave up on sleeping for more than two hours, because this time, Flynn couldn’t stop and actually think about logic or probabilities, which meant he had to always keep busy. He needed to be able to believe that Yuri would live because if Yuri, who had caused Flynn to really live, had died, where did that leave Flynn?

And somehow, in spite of the years and distance and beliefs that set them apart, Yuri managed to pick up on that in a single glance.

After the battle (after the return, after righting of the world, after the bone shaking relief), practicality won out, and Yuri’s group decided to spend the night at the camp before making another trek across the world. They ran off to set up tents for themselves (and Rita nearly set off a false alarm when she attempted to fry Raven for trying to sneak into the girl’s tent) while Flynn had been swamped with his responsibilities until past midnight. Eventually, he staggered back to his temporary sleeping area (thoughtfully pitched at Lady Estellise’s suggestion) and was confronted with the sight of one dozing black haired swordsman on his bedroll.

Before, Flynn would have woken Yuri up. Before, Flynn would have moved him. Before, Flynn would have just slept on the ground.

But this wasn’t before, it was after, and all Flynn could think of is sleep and warmth, so he dropped down on the bedroll next to his best friend and closed his eyes. The sound of Yuri’s heartbeat lulled him to sleep faster than any other trick he ever tried, and his rest was quiet, dreamless.

When the sun rises and forces Flynn awake, he finds himself curled within Yuri’s arms, and Yuri himself is staring at Flynn with those dark, fathomless eyes. Once he sees the blond is conscious, he promptly begins to interrogate him (“Flynn, what happened, and why do you look like you’ve had a Poltergeist wailing in your ear?”), drag the truth out of him (“You did what?!”), and extract a promise that Flynn will at least try to rest (“Well, you can either start sleeping again, or I could hunt you down each night and knock you out. Your choice.”) He almost persuades Flynn to come with them for a while, just to get away from his duties, but Flynn is no longer a simple knight, or a humble captain. He’s the Commandant, and he can’t just go running off into the wild blue yonder when there’s so much to be done.

So, in the end, Yuri leaves to save the world, and Flynn stays to make sure everything is in place so the world has a chance at being saved.

Yuri leaves behind the memory of warmth and safety, and all Flynn can do is cling to it when the nightmares descend upon him, reminding himself that it’s Yuri and the others won’t let anything happen to him.

It was almost easier to believe that before he came back.

Author Note:  Uh, I'm afraid to say that my other prompts (Sheena+Genis, cookie dough and Yuri+Rita, in a whale) were erased due to the meddling of a jerk of a roommate.  I'll work on getting them re-written ASAP, but they're not going to make the deadline.  Is that okay?  I didn't mean to cause any problems.
