Prompt: Asch/Natlia- "What brought me here? What am I thinking of?" (Uncertainty, Adam Mickiewicz)
Asch found himself at the door. He wasn't sure why he came here, or how his own body brought him here when mentally he knew he shouldn't be here. Natalia was still Natalia, but he was no longer the Luke she remembered. He no longer had a place with her.
She should move on and set her hopes on another man. This echoed in his mind, yet he found himself at the door of her inn room.
He fingered the small trinket, the cause of all this. He had been in the market, getting information, when he spotted it. A small, simple gold shape locket. He silently eyed it for a long time as a memory of his childhood came back to him.
He recalled Natalia wishing to one day receive a locket, especially a heart shaped locket. A simple rose was engraved on it. He didn't quite understand at the time. She was a princess, so she could buy it herself. Natalia then narrowed her eyes and stated "But a locket is supposed to be special. In a book I read, a locket was a gift between two lovers." She had leaned in closely to him. "Do you get it now?"
At the time, he didn't. Only now, staring at the locket he understood what Natalia had been hinting at. Without noticing what he was doing, he bought the locket.
I should ask the reject to give it to her. He'd instantly crushed that idea. There was no way he would ask the replica to help with this, never mind how awkward it would be for Natalia to receive that from Luke.
Asch sighed. He couldn't linger here. He had to make a decision.
Natalia awoke to a knock. Feeling groggy, she rubbed her eyes and went to the door. "Yes?"
To her surprise there was no one there. She looked up and down the hallway. "I swear if this a prank-" She spotted it on the floor. She didn't take her eyes off the locket as she bent down. Tenderly, she stroked the rose carving. Why was this here? Nobody knew she wanted a locket except...
She held the locket to her heart. "Asch, thank you."
In the shadow of the hall, from around the corner, Asch made no sound when he heard Natalia's words. Taking one more glance, he crept away, content he could keep one promise to his princess.
