“I swear!” cried Norma. “They’re going to hold a party in our honor, and yet they won’t even provide us anything nice to wear! With all the money I have to pay for my lodgings, how am I going to afford a dress?”
Chloe shook her head. “I assume that it is okay to just wear something nice that you own, dress or otherwise. I myself was going to just go in a spare uniform I have; it is customary for knights to attend parties like that in most nations.”
They were in Norma’s room at the Werites Beacon inn, discussing the invitations that had arrived for every member of Senel’s group earlier that day. As the darkness and dark imbued monsters had receded thanks to their efforts, Musette wanted to honor them with a banquet. Of course, even something so simple had to become a big deal, considering Norma was far from being the most sensible person on the team.
“Oooooooooooooh…that’s boring, C!” Norma yelled. “You’re from a notable family so I’m sure you have some dresses around to wear. And, maybe ones I can borrow. If you’re going to a party, you need to wear a beautiful dress and makeup…it makes you irresistible to the guys!”
“I haven’t worn a dress since the day I took up this sword to avenge my family,” replied Chloe under her breath.
Norma smirked, looking right into Chloe’s eyes. “Are you sure? I mean, maybe Senny will find you so drop dead gorgeous in one that he’ll sweep you off your feet!” Her comment caused Chloe to turn bright red, as she tried to explain that it didn’t work that way.
At that moment, they heard footsteps, and a soft voice asking if she could come in. Recognizing it as Shirley’s, Norma called that the door was open. In came the Merines, carrying a small bag.
“I figured we could all do each other’s makeup,” she stated. “I mean, for the party tonight. So I brought some of the stuff I had at home.”
Norma, happy that at least one person in their group understood her need for beauty, gave Shirley a thumbs up. “Good job, Shirl! Now all I need is a new dress and I’ll be set. I want to look my best, after all, because Heaven knows that Red’s gonna come looking like he just crawled out of the dumpster and I doubt any of the other guys are gonna do much better.”
Shirley agreed to let Norma borrow one of her dresses; there was only about an inch difference between them, so it wouldn’t be too small a fit. However, neither girl was able to convince Chloe to do the same; she agreed to put on a little makeup, just some blush and eyeliner, but nothing more. Agreeing to meet back in about an hour, Chloe returned to the hospital to get some rest while Norma went with Shirley in order to borrow a dress.

“Wow, Shirl!” cried Norma. “You look beautiful!” She had just finished applying makeup to her friend and was admiring her handiwork: a light coat of blush, some pale blue eye shadow and mascara. Shirley was also now wearing a long, blue dress and had her hair done up in a ponytail.
Chloe nodded from her corner of the room. “Yes. I’ll say that dress really suits you.” When Norma gave her a look, Chloe replied, “No, I am still not wearing a dress. I let you do my makeup so that should be enough.” She had a light coat of blush and eye shadow herself, both in earth tones to accent her skin rather than be seen.
Norma ignored her and turned back to Shirley. “Okay Shirl, now it’s my turn! After that, I’ll put on the dress you lent me.”
Shirley nodded and went for her supplies as Norma sat in the chair in front of the mirror. Closing her eyes, she had to resist the urge to squeal with delight as her friend applied some blush and a light coat of green eye shadow to match her dress. All too soon it was over, and Norma was left to admire herself.
“It looks great! Thanks, Shirl; I’ll be a hit at the party for sure!” she cried out. After she put on her dress, while Shirley did some last minute touchups on herself and Chloe, Norma rushed out the door.
Chloe shook her head. “She’ll never change.”
“But isn’t she more fun this way?” asked Shirley.
