Notes: This takes place in the ToDR timeline, since there are some specific scenes I wanted to reference (one in the story and one sidequest).

Rutee sighed as she walked into her room at Kalviola’s inn. They were resting for the night following a trip into the desert to help Franz find the Grim Glove. It wasn’t having gone on a side trip that bothered her, Stahn was such a nice guy that she was used to going on random quests for people she barely knew, it was the strange mirage she’d encountered.

She’d run off in search of some Gald, only to find herself back in her father’s mansion. There, she’d beheld both the father and brother Kronos had taken from her, as well as what appeared to be Marian but everyone else acted like she was Rutee’s dead mother; the girl figured it was because she couldn’t remember what the heck Chris Katrea looked like, but knew Marian had a similar appearance. But it was only a dream...just illusions created by her deep longings for the life that was stripped from her.

‘Father, Mother, Leon...I know I have to keep moving on; there’s no use drowning myself in the past. But, there are times I can’t help but wish we could have been a real family.’

Just as she buried her head in her knees, the young woman heard a knock at her door. “Rutee? Can I come in?” called the voice of Stahn Aileron.

She wanted to tell him off, to say she just needed some time alone. But knowing Stahn, that would only make him more concerned for her. Instead, Rutee said, “Sure, do whatever you want. It’s not locked.”

The girl watched as he entered, concern radiating on his face. Rutee thought back to the last time she’d seen that expression. It had been back in Radisrol, right after she’d finally been forced to admit the truth about her past.

Rutee was trying her hardest to fight back her tears; she never wanted anyone to see her cry. “He was always so rude to us; I disliked the kid more than anything. But now…why do I have to feel this pain? Why does Leon’s death make me suffer like this?”

Suddenly, Stahn took the younger girl in his arms. “I don’t know why; I’m not smart enough to figure out what’s in someone else’s head. But at least...let’s cry for him together.”

Just then, he pulled Rutee even closer, her head resting on his shoulders. She could feel warm tears streaming down her cheek, flowing onto his armor. At the same time, Stahn was rubbing her back in hopes of comforting the girl in her hour of need. They stayed like that for a minute, before Rutee felt her eyes clearing and she broke away.

“Sorry you had to see such a thing,” she apologized.

“It’s okay,” replied Stahn, “After all, you really needed to cry. Feel better?”

“Yes, a lot,” Rutee told him.

Stahn asked her, “Did something happen in the desert? You’ve looked down since I found you.”

“Nothing, it was just a mirage,” she whispered.

But Stahn wasn’t going to accept “just a mirage” as an answer and refused to leave until she told him what was up. After about five minutes of standing in the doorway, Rutee finally caved in. “I saw my family, okay! We were together, and everything seemed happy,” she snapped at him, turning around to face the window. “I didn’t ask to have this pain. It’s not like I ever really knew them...so why do I want to know them now?”

He sat down on the bed with her, a look of sympathy radiating on his face. “Not like you’re the only one. I wish I knew who my parents were; all I have is what Grandpa tells me.”

Knowing that she would only cry if she looked at him, Rutee kept her gaze on the window. “At least you have a grandfather to tell you about them and a sister to talk to...I may have a family at the orphanage, but I don’t have anyone of my own blood.”

Suddenly, she felt a hand on her shoulder. Stahn replied, “If you ever need to talk, just ask me. I may not have the answer, but I’ll at least listen. Just like back at Radisrol.”

Rutee politely thanked him, then wiped her teary eyes. Every time she’d needed him, Stahn was there. He did his best to support her no matter what, despite the fact that his words were sometimes a bit clumsy. At last, she turned around to face him, and fell into his arms. Stahn answered by pulling her closer, holding her against his body.

She felt her heart begin to speed up and her face get hot. But for some reason, the sensations were comforting. It was like all the pain in her soul went away when she was in his arms.

‘This...feeling. I’ve never been so happy as when we’re together. The more I think about it, the more I believe that I’m in love with this idiot.’

She stayed there in his arms until Mary called them for dinner.
