“Well, tomorrow’s the day!” exclaimed Loni. “We’re gonna make sure Barbatos and Elraine don’t screw up history, and the Erth’ers kick Kronos’ butt! So for now, let’s relax and enjoy the evening.”
Kyle cheered in response as Judas leaned back in his chair. Those two were always a little crazy; someone as serious as Judas had a hard time understanding them at times. But before they started teasing him about his lack of enthusiasm, the masked swordsman nodded in agreement.
Judas had to wonder how such a carefree child as the boy could become a hero, but then he remembered Stahn. It didn’t come as a surprise to him that both father and son were so alike, even though Stahn had died when Kyle was little.
‘Must be instinct, since both of them pretty much relied on that. Then again, if Kyle was anything like Rutee he would be a lot scarier…,’ thought the fencer. He didn’t want to deal with someone who’d argue with him as much as his sister.
However, despite the issues he might have had with Kyle’s lack of intelligence and Loni’s flirtatious behavior, he was happy to be around them. Since he’d put “Leon Magnus” to rest as he began his new life as “Judas,” the youth no longer needed to keep up his old persona. While he still wasn’t as open as he had been with Marian or Chaltier, he didn’t use insults and anger to push his new friends away like he’d done with Stahn’s group. For the first time in his tortured life, Judas could say he was happy just being alive.
‘I can actually call these people my friends; I don’t have to push them away out of fear. There’s no one forcing me to do his bidding while he threatens the life of someone I love. And…I can finally make it up to Stahn and Rutee by protecting their child.’
Ever since being brought back to life and meeting Kyle, Judas had felt his bleak world getting just a little bit brighter. Sure, he’d originally joined up in order to keep the kid out of trouble; Kyle had, unfortunately, inherited several of Stahn and Rutee’s most troublesome qualities, though he was much more like his father than his mother. However, it seemed he was the one being helped the most, as his newfound friendship with his nephew had brought him out of his shell…well, slightly.
‘Somehow, that boy has woken up a part of me I thought died when I threw away my real name to become “Leon Magnus.” If Marian hadn’t been captured, if I hadn’t betrayed Stahn and the others, would the same thing have happened then?’
But Judas knew no matter what, he could never change the things he’d done in the past; unlike Elraine, Reala didn’t use her powers for the party’s personal gains. For now, all he could do was continue down the path he was walking, supporting his new friends while they supported him. Judas felt more alive doing this than he ever had as a child; he was no longer alone in the world.
“Hey, Judas,” called Kyle, “Let’s go outside and play in the snow! That’s always fun.”
Before Judas could argue, the energetic teen grabbed both his hands and began pulling him towards Radisrol’s entrance. The masked fencer sighed; Kyle would be this carefree for his entire life at this rate. However, instead of arguing, he just let the boy have his fun.
‘After all…these guys have given me more enjoyment than I ever had before. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to give in to Kyle’s whims once in awhile.’
He was dragged out in the snow, Kyle’s giggles echoing in his ears.
