Book 7: The Way of the Wizard  edited by John Joseph Adams,  isbn 9781607012320, 477 pages, Prime Books,  $14.95

I find pretty much every anthology I read to be hit-or-miss, but I also find that anthologies edited by Ellen Datlow or John Joseph Adams are more hit than miss. While I was disappointed at the absence of a Harry Dresden story in an anthology so obviously suited for one (editor Adams explains that Butcher's schedule didn't allow time to write a new story and the reprint rights for the existing ones were tied up), there were more than enough stand-alone and series-connected tales for me to enjoy.

Thanks to this anthology, I'm now intrigued enough to seek out C.C. Finlay's Patriot Witch series, T.A. Pratt's Marla Mason stories, and Jonathan L. Howard's Johannes Cabal books. I enjoyed all three of these stories greatly, although the Finlay perhaps a bit more than the other two. There are also classic Earthsea and Thieves' World stories in here.

Among my other favorites: Neil Gaiman's "How To Sell The Ponti Bridge," Nnedi Okafor's "The Go-Slow," David Barr Kitley's "Family Tree," Robert Silverberg's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," and Rajan Khana's "Card Sharp."

In the "miss" category, for me personally: Ursula K. LeGuin's "The Word of Unbinding," Lev Grossman's "Endgame," and Vylar Kaftan's "The Orange-Tree Sacrifice."

Of course, your mileage may vary.
