Fandom - Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper
Length - Oneshot
Characters/Pairing - Anneliese, Julian, AnneliesexJulian
Rating - K+
Summary - Julian promised they would get out, but maybe Anneliese is okay right where they are. Takes place in between the hidden treasure/hug scene and the scene where they strike water.
Author Notes - Pure fluff for no real reason. I was just watching the scene and thinking, there needed to be a little more interaction, lol. Also, it irks me that they never kiss!! Tried to stay in character, but idk how well I did. FIRST BARBIE FANFICTION EVER. YAY ME!
Finally Free
“We’ll get out of here somehow. I promise.” Julian wanted her to believe him. To be honest, he wanted to believe himself. As he held Anneliese in his arms, he wanted nothing more than to protect her. He’d always wanted to protect her. Yet, here they were in a caved in mine. Things looked hopeless.
It didn’t seem fair for this to be happening now. Now that he knew her feelings. Then again, he maybe would have never known her feelings if it hadn’t been for everything Preminger had done to them. Perhaps there was some silver lining. However, it wasn’t really a silver lining, he argued with himself. Because he would rather see Anneliese safe and sound in the palace, at her wedding with King Dominick even, than trapped in a place where she very well could die.
“It doesn’t matter,” Anneliese whispered. It was as though she could hear his thoughts. It was like she could sense his troubled mind and wanted to reassure him that no matter what happened, she was okay with it. Perhaps her mind was occupied with the same back and forth thoughts.
“What do you mean?” Julian finally pulled away from her so he could study her face. How could she be okay with their situation?
“I mean, it doesn’t matter if we get out of here,” Anneliese put on a brave smile as she said it. She was always cheerful and accepting in the face of uncertainty. “As long as I’m with you right here and now, then nothing else matters to me.” It was mostly true. Of course, thoughts of her mother who was possibly on her way to marrying that no good Preminger and the well being of her kingdom did enter her mind as well.
“But, Anneliese,” Julian gently cupped her face. “I love you. I love you so much that I would prefer you marry King Dominick and learn to care for him. I don’t want to have to watch you rot away here. I love you, Anneliese, and I want you to live.”
A hush came over the small area and both Julian and Anneliese were sure the other could hear the way their heart was beating. While it had never been a secret to Anneliese that Julian shared her feelings, never had he been bold enough to speak such heartfelt words or look at her so intimately. Anneliese wanted nothing more than to kiss this man who had grown to be her best friend and the only person she could ever give her whole heart to. But you’re promised to another man. You are a royal. It is improper. Thought after thought invaded Anneliese’s peace as she and Julian stayed there frozen, staring at one another, for what felt like forever.
At last, the princess’s heart won its battle against her mind. She didn’t care about what was proper or improper. No matter what Julian wanted or promised, the truth was they might never escape. The last thing she wanted to do was waste what short time that was left worrying about royal duties for a kingdom she would never rule or the waiting king she would never even meet. Even if she did make it back somehow, like Julian hoped they would, for now Anneliese was finally free.
At this moment, when life was in limbo, Anneliese was free to be the girl she was behind the royal title. She could cry in fear, get her dress dirty (well dirtier) trying to break through the rocks, or whatever else she wanted. Having no certainty meant having no restrictions, she finally reasoned.
“Julian,” she whispered, breaking the tension that swelled the air around them and left them feeling pinned in even further. “I love you too. No matter what happens, I’ll always love you.”
With that, Anneliese kissed Julian, who was stunned at first, but welcomed the kiss just the same. It was short and sweet, but filled with the passion they both had for one another.
“No matter what happens?” Julian asked, wanting to make extra certain. Anneliese nodded. “Okay then,” he said getting up and grabbing the pickax once more. If Anneliese would love him no matter what happened, he was going to do his best to get them out of there no matter what it might mean for their future together.
Anneliese sighed and smiled a little, unable to be angry at him for trying so hard to free them from their prison, or more accurately get them out so she could return to her real prison. As she looked down at the geode that sat beside her, she was struck with an epiphany. Picking it up and inspecting it again, it dawned on her that she could perhaps still save the kingdom and without the help of King Dominick. Her mother wouldn’t have to marry Preminger under false pretenses and she…
“I won’t have to marry King Dominick!” She exclaimed, the excitement of her thoughts getting the better of her.
“What?” Julian stopped for a moment and turned to give his princess a baffled look.
“We have to get out of here, Julian!” Her tone had taken a nearly one-eighty turn. “I have a plan.”
As he set back to work on the rocks, Julian smiled. He knew that whatever Princess Anneliese had in mind, it would work. So long as they escaped.
The End
