I've been having a lot of fun doing historical research--- on my house. It's kind of like doing genealogy because you're really learning about the people who have lived in the house over time. I probably won't be learning about every family that lived in this house because it has been a rental duplex for about half it's history-- although I do have their names.
The house was built in 1903. I am missing at this point who-if anyone lived-owned the house for the first 3 years.
Starting in 1906 Peter and Ida Edwall lived in this house. Peter died in 1912, and Ida lived until 1928. Carl, their son, continued to live in the house until 1939 with his family.
So who are the Edwall's? Have you heard of the town Edwall, WA? Peter and his brother Erick and his wife Ida founded the town. They each bought 2 160 acre plots and homesteaded 2 more-- all attached. They gave building rights free to the railroad and a town was built. Erick died a couple years after proving up his homestead in 1888 leaving Ida a childless widow. Peter married Ida a couple years later, and they adopted Carl Axel (Peterson?? A historical article in a book called him Axel Peterson but I haven't proved the last name connection yet). The Edwall's were born in Sweden, all 4 of them, and came to the states between the early 1870's and 1890's (Carl). We found the adults in NV in 1880, and they were in Lincoln (Spokane at the time) County by 1887(tax audit census)... and as early as 1883 according to the article. Erick proved up his land in 1888-- so if the laws at that point were 5 years that fits. Carl married Florence and they had 4 children- 2 boys, 2 girls. They lived in Curlew Wa for awhile before moving to Spokane. They lived at 803 E Liberty Ave for many years until they moved in the late 20's to this house... I'm presuming to help care for Ida in her last couple of years. Carl worked as a clerk/manager for Hazelwood Co Ltd for many years... based on the census a lumberyard... but I haven't really checked into that. In 1929 Polk directory he is listed as working at gas & oil, N 1625 Division, and later as a grain buyer. They are last listed in the Polk in 1939 and Florence died in Spokane in 1942. More searching to do.... SMILE...
Maybe next week I will take a fieldtrip to Edwall, WA and go visit the town museum... see if I can get more information and pictures.
I also want to go to Spokane City Hall and see if I can get more information on the building of the home and first ownership. It would also be cool to see how many people owned it during it's long rental period.
Eventually it would be cool to see if there are any Edwall's still in Spokane from the family-- maybe get some more family history.
