Went and saw Avatar again, in 3D this time. It did look pretty nice--some of the problems with the CG resolve themselves much better this way--but dammit, the glasses really hurt my head. I have the same problem with safety glasses, too; the arms bite into my head in the soft skin just above my ears. It was absolutely packed, to the point where groups of people were picking out individual seats for themselves; I had tried to get into the IMAX 3D version but had no luck, obviously. Also, while I have heard of such things happening, this was the first time I had actually seen the audience break into applause at the end. I tend to view the "this movie has revolutionized filmmaking!" comments with skepticism, but I must admit that given the popularity of this movie, I have to wonder how it will affect the sci-fi genre, specifically. It doesn't hurt that 2009 was a very good year for sci-fi, all told, between this, District 9, and Star Trek. Sadly, none of these really do well on female or minority leads (Jake Sully doesn't count as minority, even though he spends most of the movie being blue), and I'm still waiting for a return of the Ripley-esque model of female character in mainstream entertainment.
Sat around with Adric last night and this morning, watching stuff. Yesterday we finished off season four of Babylon 5, and started re-watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex to see if we can actually make sense of what's going on this time around (I can understand what their doing but often I have no comprehension of why; both of us tend to zone out whenever they start talking politics). Today we watched some Cowboy Bebop. As an aside, it continually baffles me that, although the Major appears to be nearly asexual, contrary to her revealing clothing and large breasts, and is also a really tough, no-nonsense sort of woman, a lot of the promotional art of her and the figurines seem to portray her as vulnerable and in the throes of sexual ecstasy. This is completely out of character, and yeah, I know that she's hot, but damn, if I were I guy I'd want her to stay as far away from my delicate bits as possible, for fear that they might not be there next time I check.
I finished reading City of Bones the other day, after being glued to my chair for several hours and finally rising only after three o'clock on the second day to take a shower and get dressed. I have this to say about it: It was pretty good. It's basically about a bunch of amateur archaeologists fighting the Man while trying to make money. It ends a bit abruptly, though.
