River wasn't sure what to do after her swimming with Dean. She'd wanted to talk to Inara or Alice, but she hadn't been able to find either of them. She thought about that Doctor Cuddy, but dismissed it. She'd been to bed with Dean ( Read more... )

"Oh, Hey.." Sam let out softly. He was surprised to feel a body curling around his until he saw who it was and strangely... it seemed too appropriate somehow. He wrapped strong arms around her, enveloping her lithe body in a warm embrace.

"You all right?" He asked her gently. One big hand ghosting it's way over the back of her hand, down over her long hair.

It wasn't the same as Simon, but it helped. "Are people going home?" she asked, hoping he would know. "They're disappearing. Maybe the Hotel is swallowing them whole." She didn't think the hotel was sentient to that degree, but she wasn't sure of much at this point. She knew this wasn't Miranda, but it wasn't logical. Wasn't sane. For once, she had the market on sanity.

"I don't think anyone's going home yet." He said, not entirely sure how to answer, but feeling like he needed to. "Who's been disappearing on you?" He asked attentively.

"Inara. Alice." She doubted he knew Inara yet, but he was smarter than she used to give him credit for. He could guess. "Can't talk to anyone else. But 大熊猫 has his uses." She snuggled a little, in a strictly sisterly way. He was enormous and overwhelming, like a panda. And he didn't seem to object to petting her hair like Simon did.

Mandarin Chinese: dà xióng māo - "giant panda."

"I see." Sam couldn't fight the small smile that cropped up when he heard her use the pet name she dubbed him with, now that he knew what it meant. He ran a steady hand over her hair.

"Well I'm sorry that everyone disappeared and you had to resort to using your dà xióng māo." His accent was significantly better than Dean's, but it still left something to be desired.

That made River smile. "You learned." She looked up at him, honestly a bit impressed. "Did Inara teach you?" Maybe he had met her. His eyes seemed to flicker when she said the older woman's name.

She still stayed hugging him. He was warm and soft and, well, brotherly, and she rested her head back against his big shoulder. "Tried to teach Dean, too."

"She didn't teach me, exactly. I came across her in the lobby when she arrived and I helped her up to her room." Sam explained. "We got to talking and she told me what the phrase meant." He said offering her another smile. He wouldn't say how it embarrassed him initially because he was actually sort of fond of the nickname now. "She's... interesting." He wasn't sure how else to describe her that didn't sound... strange.

"How's the teaching working out?" He asked in reference to her comment on teaching Dean.

"'Nara knows everything." River nodded. She finally let him go, but she wasn't sure what to do with her body or her hands now that she was adrift again. She flicked her fingers together idly as she spoke. "The cap'n will be sad without her there. She tells him the truth."

When he brought up Dean, she bit her lip moodily. "He remembers it."

Sam nodded a little. "Come on, let's go for a walk.." He suggested offering her one of his hands to take. She said she needed to talk, or well that's what he was picking up anyway. They could get some fresh air and see the limited places where their feet would carry them.

River nodded eagerly, relieved to be engaging in some form of movement. She was a dancer, never mind bored; being cooped up grated at one so.

As they walked outside, River swivelled her head from side to side, taking in everything from the arid climate to the air that hissed across her face. "I was walking on Jiangyin with Simon when I woke here."

"That must've been difficult..." Sam said. Simon was probably as worried about River as she was about him. "Being one place, waking up somewhere else."

River shrugged. "Thought I fainted from the heat. This place is its twin." Arid and dry. Good for cattle. "We are unto dust, and to dust we shall return."

Sam just blinked a little saying nothing. If he understood her right, that was a little morbid, not that he wasn't guilty of the same thing occasionally.

He looked confused, which wasn't new. River sighed. "Do you think we're dead?" She'd been curious. "But people can't fall in love when they're dead. At least no scientific evidence says so."

"No, I don't think we're dead." Sam said, he hadn't been sure before, but he was pretty sure now.

"I don't either." It was nice to get some validation for her opinion, though of course it was only opinion.

River looked up at him, though, bitten lips pressed thin. "You're so stormy. Your family." She'd certainly noticed. "Don't you ever find calm seas?"
