Er.  What just happened?

I remember it started off as if it was going to be a flood, but then...

So did this just become another thing that happens, while I was away?  Does anyone know why they've started?

['Friend' here is defined by the 'one friendly conversation' rule, that's how Merlin rolls.]

Is everyone alright?  I know a couple ( Read more... )

I'm not avoiding you!

...

I didn't mean to avoid you. I just wasn't very good company for a while, after my father was here. And you don't need to avoid me.

It's okay. I wasn't great company either, but after the last time we hung out, I just kind of figured it might be better to avoid you and pretend it never happened. Can we go back to that?

Yeah, if you're sure.

Not the avoiding, though.

You don't have to do that.

..Okay, I hate this? But maybe, maybe we should talk about it.

...I think that might be better than just having it always be The Thing We Never Talked About.

Do you want to meet somewhere?

[A long and painful twenty minutes later, Hayley arrived at Merlin's door. She fidgeted with his bracelet around her wrist before realizing what she was doing and immediately forcing her hands down to her sides. Finally, she took a deep breath and knocked. After all, this was Merlin. They would still be friends, no matter what.. wouldn't they?]

[Merlin took a few moments longer than usual to come to the door, having sat and fidgeted for a couple of seconds after hearing the knock. Inevitably, though, he opened the door for her and stepped back to let her in.]

Hiya.

[Hayley immediately donned her usual smile, trying to pretend it wasn't awkward between them, despite the obvious tension.]

"Hey." [A pause.] "How are you?"

"I'm fine. The flood - port - whatever it was, it was sort of straightforward for me. I had the same sort of job I had in Camelot." Merlin wasn't much good at lying about small things, but the big stuff came easily - he wasn't fine. The flood had left him bewildered and uncomfortable. "What about you?"

"That's good! I'm glad it was straight forward for you." [She replied honestly, too caught up in her own thoughts to even consider he might be lying. Then the girl shifted awkwardly in the doorway and shrugged in a fashion dismissive of the events of the flood.] "I was totally stupid. Then I was kidnapped, almost got married, and was begrudgingly rescued."

[Another shrug, because she was trying to downplay it while distracted.] "Whatever."

He gave a somewhat wan smile, still stood back from the door. "It wasn't really you. Or any of us, really. Are you coming in?"

"Oh, uh, yeah." [She shuffled in, stopping just inside, but giving him enough space to close the door. Realizing this particular topic they were meant to be discussing was bad enough, now coming here to talk about it? Hayley felt like she had regressed to junior high. Only twice before had she admitted the extent of her feelings; once with Harvey, in a different way, and once to Sam while in a flood. This was something new.]

"I'm glad you're doing well." [She repeated, shoving her hands into her pockets now.]

"Thank you. I'm glad you are, too - now that you're yourself again." He sat down on the end of the bed, trying not to look as nervous as he felt. He wasn't quite so dense that he didn't already have a good idea of what Hayley was going to say; what was making him almost nauseous was the fact he had no idea what he was going to say back.
