This meme was around a month ago or so, I think? But I didn't really do it because I didn't have time / wasn't in the right headspace / etc.

Well, I've only played Abyss and sort of Symphonia (seen the first ~10 hours of the first game and read the manga, and seen all of the second game), so I cannot compare Vesperia to all of them. But in general! I feel like Tales protagonists on average are very... completely earnest and well-meaning, and often slightly dumb? And there's not really anyone like that in Vesperia. Yuri is definitely the black sheep of main protagonists, and in general the whole party (including Flynn) is on board with sarcasm and snark and friendly teasing. I love how the Vesperia party interacts a lot, possibly more than any other video game party ever.

The story itself is not particularly groundbreaking, and in fact feels sort of rushed/unfinished in places (I kind of suspect they finished it more for the PS3 version, which I sadly still do not have access to), but it is unique among the Tales games I have played in that I did not WTF at the ending at all, and in fact was completely happy with it! And as I've noted in Tales chan a couple of times, there is remarkably little childhood trauma in Vesperia. Not to say that the game doesn't still address some serious issues (I really love how Yuri and Flynn have a conflict of ideals while always being friends who care about each other), but no one has their whole family murdered in front of them when they are five or is locked in a basement for slave labor.

As far as antagonists go... er, most of the early ones are pretty flat. Yeager is a second-half villain, and is at least interestingly crazy. Um, I am not sure how much you want to be spoiled for things, and I definitely don't want to spoil everyone else reading this, so I'm just going to spoiler highlight the rest of this. Don't read it if you don't want to know who turns out to be an antagonist. [Raven is only sort of a traitor and actually quite possibly the character who would ping you most if you played the game. Alexei I feel like could have been a lot more engaging as a manipulative bastard, considering his goals and his relationship to Raven, but I do not feel like the game fleshes out what he thinks he's doing enough. And there's too much deranged cackling. Really by far the most memorable antagonist is Duke, who actually has interesting backstory and reasoning for what he's doing. Even if he also helps the party out for most of the game.]

...I could talk about Vesperia for a long time, apparently.

What is cool about the other Tales games I have not played?

I am so out of it so if this is incoherent, uh. whoops.

Tales of Eternia (Destiny 2 over here, boo) is kind of mediocre. I mean, I sat here trying to think about what I liked and ... I liked Keele a lot, he was a great character, and I thought the plot was interesting - it was the first Tales game to do the two world thing - but I really didn't care for the two main characters, Reid and Farah. It's been nearly 8 or so years since I've played it though. HOWEVER, it has this ridiculously addictive card game called WHIS. I couldn't get into the Final Fantasy card games, but man, I sat around playing WHIS for hours. It was ridiculous.

Also, I forgot Phantasia from the list and I love that game even if it's very 90s RPG-ish. And it has this summoner, Klarth, who is AMAZING and he fights with a porn mag so you know he's great.

What's some of the headcanon that you have for one of your characters?
