Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
This just may be the book that changed my life. I certainly don't think I'd be doing what I'm doing now if I hadn't read some abridged and illustrated version of this book when I was a kid. I fell absolutely in love with the character of Ivanhoe and the story. And it led me to where I am now. It's such a beautiful tale, and so well-written. It really transports you into the narrative itself.
