I bought my rat Mia a little friend today. I got really lucky and found a rare blue hooded rat. She is white with a light slate blue hood over her head and back. She's a cute little baby named Tallie. [pictures soon!] I tried to introduce the rats gently by holding them in each hand but they weren't feelin' it so I decided to do things the hard way and send Tallie in there sink or swim. This is a log of their behavior...
Ratters Log 4:11PM - I put Tallie in the cage and she is starting to explore the upper levels. I am suprised by how outgoing she is right away.
Ratters Log 4:14PM - Tallie is pacing up and down between the 2nd and 3rd levels. Mia decided tyo investigate. She is approaching cautiously.
Ratters Log 4:16 - Mia has abandoned the slow and cautious act and has gone stright into playing mommie with Tallie. She is licking her and grooming her.
Ratters Log 4:20 - After a few minutes of grooming each other Mia got a bit too rough and made Tallie cry. Twice. Mia felt so bad that she ran away and is now hiding in her bed on the ground level.
Ratters Log 4:27 - Mia has gone into total brat mode. Tallie is sitting in a small food bowl on the top level and Mia keeps going up there and shoving her head under Tallie into the food bowl to pick out the biggest piece of food in it and take it away. I'm worried that I got excited too quickly and that this might nor work out.
Ratters Log 4:35 - Clearly Mia feels bad about being such a brat. It seems like she doesn't know how to approach Tallie so she has decided to climb the cage walls to get to Tallie instead of using the ramps. She had never climbed the walls like that before. I'm feeling better about this and can tell that having a companion is already getting Mia to be more active.
Ratters Log 4:45 Tallie and Mia are getting along famously now. Now they've been inseperable for the last 10 minutes and have been curled up in a ball together. I noticed some grooming and pecking going on. They are sharing the food in the bowl...or seeing who can eat it all first? Perhaps this is a not so friendly competition.
More logging later?
