"You'd be dead if it wasn't for me."
It cuts, because that's exactly what he had been searching for. The end. And if her smile didn't make him want to smell the sweet tang of freshly cut grass or if their hands didn't fit like two lost pieces of a locket, he might be angry at her for swinging into his life and making him want to live it.
So he spends his life with her. They leave their footprints in the snow and he leaves his fingerprints on her skin, and they leave creases in time that belong solely to them alone. And when she comes back, her love for him blinding, he swallows it whole even though it kills him.
There was nothing before her, and there will be nothing after her. No matter what kind of man he is after the fire, he was and always will be hers.

Oh. Oh my god.
Oh my god, Kat.
So he spends his life with her. They leave their footprints in the snow and he leaves his fingerprints on her skin, and they leave creases in time that belong solely to them alone. And when she comes back, her love for him blinding, he swallows it whole even though it kills him.
I can't even catch my breath, this is so beautiful and perfect and so he spends his life with her and swallows it whole even though it kills him and oh, Kat. I love you.

Oh wow. That is just so gorgeous, so achingly beautiful.
They leave their footprints in the snow and he leaves his fingerprints on her skin
Loved this line, actually just loved the entire thing, I had to re-read it several times before I could come up with something more coherent to say than just "wow" or "guh."

I love, love, LOVE this. I think this may be my new favorite Nine drabble. I read it twice and waited 10 minutes, and this is all the coherence I can manage. And that line, The Line that everyone's swooning over, is perfection. Beautiful, heartbreaking perfection.

Your title makes me think of that poem about the eagle. The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls.
