Doctor Who and Torchwood - London

Dec 19, 2008 21:36

Okie dokie, so. My recent trip to Cardiff and London produced many, many Doctor Who and Torchwood-related photos, seeing as I traveled with some hardcore fans of the shows and became a big fan myself just before leaving. We went to two Doctor Who expos, one in Earl's Court in London and one in Cardiff, and we also traipsed around both cities fangirling various recognizable Doctor Who and Torchwood spots. It seems only fair that I share these adventures with LJ, since God knows no one in my real life cares about this stuff besides the people I traveled with. :) Lots of photos are ahead, as well as a few videos. And, since I wanted to keep these posts public but am paranoid about showing my face to the internetz, there are a couple photos in here where the faces are blacked out. Looks dumb, but that's how it's gonna be.

Anyway, off we go! London's in this entry, and Cardiff will come in another. This entry includes spoilers for Doctor Who seasons 1 through 4.

I'll start off with some of the areas in London we visited that have been featured in episodes of Doctor Who.

Big BenObviously, Big Ben is cooler for more than just Doctor Who reasons, but the clock tower appears in both episode 1.4, "Aliens in London," and 1.9, "The Empty Child."

The stupid Slitheens smashed up the thing...

...but it was still intact and pretty when I saw it.

This is also as close as we got to the London Eye, which shows up as a transmitter in 1.1, "Rose."

Torchwood TowerThe site of Torchwood 1 as seen in 1.12, "Army of Ghosts," and 1.13, "Doomsday."

Bye bye, Daleks!

We took the Tube to Canary Wharf for no other reason than to find this building, haha. Don't judge. But yeah, pretty sure this is the building where Torchwood was located.

The Globe TheatreAgain, way awesome for reasons beyond Doctor Who, particularly for English nerds like me. Shakespeare's Globe appears in 3.2, "The Shakespeare Code."

Guh. Hello, Doctor.

The wiki tells me they actually filmed here, which is all kinds of cool. Apparently the Doctor Who people weren't fans of the back of the actual stage, though, since there's a backdrop up in the screencap.

Rich and important people would sit in these seats.

There are a lot more places in London that have been featured in Doctor Who, clearly, but in the short day and a half that we were there, those were the sites that we managed to see. :)

On to the Doctor Who expo in Earl's Court!

This was a big walk-through exhibition featuring costumes, props, and all that jazz from seasons 1 through 4 of Doctor Who. Four of us went, and we managed to be the only people in the whole place, which rocked.

The ULTIMATE ENCOUNTER, you guys.

So we start out walking through the scary mannequins from 1.1, "Rose," and the damn things MOVE.

Sure, they look innocent, BUT THEY'RE NOT.

Luckily, Ten and the TARDIS are waiting for us on the other side. Can't tell from the picture, but David Tennant's face is badly synced up to the blank face on the mannequin (not a scary evil one, mind you).

Then we get Martha's outfit!

And Donna's, from 4.1, "Partners in Crime."

This little guy's from 1.2, "The End of the World"...

...as are these gentlemen.

Rose's outfit, from 2.1, "New Earth."

A page from the script of 1.1, "Rose." Here's an excerpt:

INT. BASEMENT ROOM - NIGHT 1 - CONTINUOUS

Darkness. ROSE reaches for the light switch -

Pools of light snap on; the rest of the room stays pitch black. It's a big storage space, lined with pipes and cables. And full of shop window DUMMIES. Sixty, male and female - not neatly arranged, but crowded in, all caught in different lifeless poses. Stark illumination from the lights, steep shadows on smooth, expressionless faces. (No wigs, the hair's part of the sculpture, like a statue.)

ROSE...Wilson?

Another mannequin.

Zu Zanna, from 1.12, "Bad Wolf."

A gas mask from 1.9, "The Empty Child," and 1.10, "The Doctor Dances."

Props from 1.7, "The Long Game," 1.12, "Bad Wolf," and 1.13, "Doomsday" here...

...and here.

The Face of Boe, from the side.

Plans and model for the Blaidd Drwg Project, from 1.11, "Boom Town."

Oh noes, a Slitheen! And our blacked-out faces, lol

Scary Santa dude and a Sycorax from the pre-season 2 Christmas special, "The Christmas Invasion."

More Christmas special props.

A model of the Tylers' flat, from the Christmas special again, I believe (you can see little Christmas decorations hanging from some of the railings).

Hi again, Big Ben! You look much smaller now.

Also a teensy bit destroyed. I'm an idiot and didn't take a picture of the side actually seen on camera, but whatever. This is the back.

Cat nurse lady from 2.1, "New Earth."

Sick people costume from the same episode.

Cat nurse #2.

And Cassandra, from both "New Earth" and "The End of the World."

Icky Victor, from 2.10, "Love and Monsters."

Victor's costume as human, as well as his cane.

This is in a room dedicated to makeup design. There are 4 different display cases that show the evolution of an Ood, and this is the last one, the final product.

Sexy Ten and his sexy fabric swatches.

There were other fabric swatches too, but I didn't care as much about them, hehe.

Another scary Santa, this time from the pre-season 3 Christmas special, "The Runaway Bride."

Donna's pretty wedding dress from the same episode.

Empress of the Racnoss from the Christmas special. She likes to twitch her mechanical spider limbs and scare the bejeesus out of you when you aren't looking.

The Torchwood telescope from 2.2, "Tooth and Claw"...

...as well as the Koh-i-Noor diamond and mistletoe...

...a warrior monk...

...and Queen Victoria's dress.

An Ood from 2.8, "The Impossible Planet."

Cute little K-9 from 2.3, "School Reunion."

He moves and talks when you press a button.

Drawings from 2.11, "Fear Her." Luckily, unlike K-9, they do not move.

Yay Shakespeare! From 3.2, "The Shakespeare Code," a witch and her cauldron...

...and a hanging sign.

Rose's 50s costume from 2.7, "The Idiot's Lantern."

Also from "The Idiot's Lantern."

From 2.4, "The Girl in the Fireplace," the dissecting table...

...and a Clockword Droid.

A scarecrow from 3.8, "Human Nature," and 3.9, "Family of Blood."

Lookee, we're in the TARDIS! Green screens are fun.

From 2.5, "Rise of the Cybermen," and 2.6, "The Age of Steel," worker people...

...Cybermen...

...and the Cyber-Controller.

A Judoon from 3.1, "Smith and Jones."

REALLY SCARY WEEPING ANGEL from 3.10, "Blink."

John Smith's and Martha's outfits from 3.8, "Human Nature," and 3.9, "Family of Blood."

Professor Yana's/the Master's suit from 3.11, "Utopia," 3.12, "The Sound of Drums, and 3.13, "The Last of the Time Lords."

Costumes from 3.11, "Utopia."

A Hath from 4.6, "The Doctor's Daughter."

The Dalek emperor, oh noes! From 1.13, "The Parting of the Ways."

A space suit from 3.7, "42"...

...as well as a helmet/mask thing...

...and an escape pod.

From 4.4, "The Sontaran Strategy," and 4.5, "The Poison Sky," a Sontaran.

Plans for the Empire State Building from 3.4, "Daleks in Manhattan," and 3.5, "Evolution of the Daleks."

Holy shit holy shit WE'RE GONNA DIE, GUYS, THE DALEKS ARE COMING!

This was the highlight of the London expo, no lie. You walk into this room in which music from "Doomsday" is playing on a loop, and three Daleks are in there, hanging out. You wait around for a little while, and then THIS HAPPENS:

Do remember that despite all that screaming, there are only four of us in there, hahaha. We're loud.

I took pictures the second time through the show...

...and the scary Daleks continue to be scary!

I haven't finished season 4 yet, but I'm told this is Davros. In an attempt not to spoil myself more than I already have, I'm not going to delve into the wiki to learn which episode he's from. :)

A showgirl costume and a pig slave from 3.4, "Daleks in Manhattan," and 3.5, "Evolution of the Daleks."

This is fun, you crawl inside the Dalek and talk into a microphone and it converts your voice into a freaky Dalek one. You can also wiggle the Dalek's appendages around, hee.

This is from post-4.6, I believe, which is where I'm at in season 4.

From the pre-season 4 Christmas special, "Voyage of the Damned," which I also haven't seen yet.

Again, I'm not sure ... lol, I really need to finish the season.

"Voyaged of the Damned" again.

From 4.8, "Silence in the Library," and 4.9, "Forest of the Dead," here are some things I don't know about...

...and more things I don't know about.

A Sybelline costume from 4.2, "The Fires of Pompeii." OMG, it's the end of the London expo! Finally. *collapses*

Cardiff will be coming soon!
