A while ago I thought I'd do an essay about the main differences between Aragorn's character and attitude in the books, as compared to him in the movies. But then I realised that it really boils down to these two quotes:
THE BOOK
Aragorn stood a while hestitating. "It is not my will," he said, "to put aside my sword or to deliver Andúril to the hand of any other man."
"It is the will of Théoden," said Hama.
"It is not clear to me that the will of Théoden son of Thengel, even though he be lord of the Mark, should prevail over the will of Aragorn son of Arathorn, Elendil's heir of Gondor."
THE MOVIE
Théoden: I know what it is you want of me. I will not risk open war.
Aragorn: Open war is upon you, whether you would risk it or not.
Théoden: When last I looked, Théoden, not Aragorn, was king of Rohan.
Aragorn: [... :/]
Maybe one day I will elaborate.
