Personality:
Syaoran, a son of the Li clan of sorcerers of Hong Kong, is the descendant of the great wizard Clow Reed's mother. Not much is known about his father, but Syaoran's mother Li Yelan had high expectations of her son. Ever since he was a young child, Syaoran spent his days studying and training in academics, martial arts, and sorcery. The result of these heavy expectations is a very independent, very serious boy with a good amount of social ineptness. His cousin, Meilin, states in episode 43 of the series, regarding a much younger Syaoran: "I've always trained alongside Syaoran, but he wouldn't smile nor talk to me... he was always studying, and didn't seem to have any fun at all." She admits that, with age, especially since Syaoran moved to Japan, that he has become more open and approachable, but throughout the story, the boy is depicted as an edgey, often irritable child. However, incredibly mature for his age, Syaoran is also taciturn and softs-spoken.... but it only just takes a particularly irritating acquaintance or a little bit of teasing (mainly from his classmate Tomoyo) in order for him to show a wide range of emotions from fluster to anger.

At the very beginning of his cast in the CCS series, Syaoran is portrayed as the heroine, Sakura's, antagonist. He and the girl, who was chosen to gather Clow Reed's scattered magical cards by the guardian Cerberos, competed for the cards and were eventually tested against each other in the Final Judgement, to choose who will be the new Master of the Clow Cards. Ultimately, Sakura gained possession of the cards, and to Syaoran, and possibly some members of his clan (although it is not stated), Syaoran had failed his mission and duties.

...Now, Syaoran is not a static character. Although he was clearly Sakura's rival for the first two seasons, by the end of that latter season he has become close friends with both Sakura and Sakura's best friend, Tomoyo. He had used to treat Sakura with blatant unkindness and dislike, he has slowly grown used to her cheerful presence, and he was very protective of the girl. By the beginning of the third season (after all of the cards were collected and Sakura was named the new Master), it is evident that Syaoran, the stoic warrior of the Li clan, had developed an elementary school crush on the girl. Even though he was planning to return to Hong Kong soon, he abruptly changes his mind the moment the new student in class, Hiiragizawa, starts acting extremely friendlily with Sakura. This little fact that he does like her, however, follows the cliché pattern of being obvious to everyone but himself and Sakura for a good half of the season. During this time, Syaoran is helplessly flustered by everything that involved Sakura; he would blush beet red, stutter, and back away as if frightened if she appeared within three feet of him. Tomoyo, who was very aware of his feelings, did not help much by only teasing him about Hiiragizawa and Sakura. Around the time frame that he is taken from, however, he is fully aware of his affections towards the girl, is finally calling her by her name, and is still pretty much the same way that he was until he began to really like Sakura. He is still usually calm and serious and a joy to tease, even with the exaggerated reactions he has to Sakura and the overall ridiculousness of eleven year olds, developing such crushes on their classmates.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Intelligence: The Li clan is known for its powerful sorcery, and is probably filthy rich if their house in the first movie is any indication. Syaoran received a great education in Hong Kong, and he excels at most of his subjects at the Tomoeda Elementary School in Japan, with Japanese as his one weak subject.
+ Physical strength and abilities: Again a souvenir of being raised a Li member, Syaoran has trained in the martial arts since he was a very, very young child, and is portrayed to be a master martial artist.
+ Guts: He doesn't seem to waver in fear of anything (except his mother). This has helped him save the day with Sakura many many times.
+ Cooking: There is something about CCS kids being wonderful cooks, and Syaoran is no exception.

- His strict upbringing came with extreme social awkwardness. He can respect elders all he wants, but he's terrible at dealing with people his age, especially Sakura.
- Easily irritable. He's mature and quiet, but he's also easily flustered, which often leads to irritation and anger.
- NO. SENSE. OF. HUMOR. Seriously. He's going to be a very angry child with all this cloud cuckoo-lander thing going on...
