Kei sighs, gazing blearily out into the rain. It’s been months since he’s kept himself up into the morning like this rather than catch a few minutes of sleep, but the first droplets of rain beating against the roof of their top-floor apartment had been enough to convince him to stay awake, driven by the desire to possibly spend a part of the day with Sho. And so he sits, feeling three-fourths sleepy and one-fourth excited; he has no idea what Sho might propose they do, but the blonde knows he will be content with whatever Sho chooses, because the teenager will never leave him behind on a day he can enjoy the sun. He never has. Not since he discovered that Kei could be outside during the day in the rain, not since he discovered that the vampire was indeed quite happy to be included in whatever foolishness he and Toshi could concoct.
He lets his eyes drift to where the clouds are steadily lightening, a sense of trepidation coupled with sleep-muted anticipation drifting through him as he remembers all the different opportunities rainy days used to present, when he was still looking after three and a half children - half because Shinji wanted nothing to do with him, three because Toshi and Sho put together were more than enough trouble. Between their games, silliness, and general fun-natured amusements, Kei remembers being truly happy he was alive. Foolishness indeed...

“Wake up, Kei!” The little boy shoves the blankets off of the figure of the man beneath them, grabbing a bony shoulder and rocking the slender form beneath back and forth until dark, mossy-green eyes open. It hadn’t taken Sho long to figure out that the newest addition to their little family couldn’t handle the sun - he had figured that out the minute he had seen him - but, by the same token, he had discovered through several weeks of trial and error that the vampire could be up during the daytime if there was rain and the sun wasn’t shining through the clouds. And so he shakes again, clearly intent on making sure the older creature is awake before he pulls back a little, waiting almost sheepishly as Kei’s eyes slide over to him.
“It’s daytime,” the vampire mutters sleepily and Sho almost giggles at his reluctance to wake up before Kei grabs the blankets from where Sho has half pushed them off of him, dragging them back over himself. His next words are muffled. “Let me sleep.”
“But it’s not sunny! You can come out, right?”
Despite Sho’s protests Kei has in fact heard the rain - it’s hard not to, with the way it’s pounding onto their current home, a concrete building that may or may not have been used as a warehouse in the past - Kei can still smell the wood of crates, but underneath that, he can always smell drugs. He’s thinking about relocating again soon -
A sharp jab at the side of his ribs interrupts the blonde’s train of thought and Sho pulls the top of the blankets off, exposing Kei’s face.
“Just for a few minutes, then you can go back to sleep?” Sho whines with all the convincing talent of an eight year old. Kei groans as the child begins to pout at the lack of reaction, and a moment later he drags himself to a sitting position, eyeing the boy warily.
“Just a few minutes.”
Sho tugs on his sleeve in an attempt to hurry him. “We’re playing tag, Onii-chan’s it.”
Kei almost goes back to bed. It’s no secret Shinji hates him, and he’s not in the mood to sort out the inevitable fight that will occur between Sho and his older brother the second Shinji says something rude. But, as he looks over, Shinji looks at him grudgingly, his normal glare tempered to a bad-tempered stare, something that tells the vampire that this is entirely Sho’s doing. With a sigh, Kei gets up and walks over when Sho motions for him to.
That seems to be the sign for the game to begin; Shinji limps towards Toshi as quickly as his injured leg will allow him, and Kei watches, half in pity and half in curiosity for how Shinji will pull off tagging the younger boy.
In short, he won’t be able to and Kei eyes Sho for a moment before taking a breath and jogging over to Shinji.
“Tag me.”
Instantly and predictable, Shinji recoils and his stare becomes a reproachful glare just before he barks out,
“Get away from me, monster!”
“Onii-chan,” Sho whines immediately and Kei fights the urge to roll his eyes at the nasal tone, a smile tugging at his lips as he watches Shinji do the same with less success. “You promised you wouldn’t be mean to Kei!”
Sho’s words are apparently true; the older boy pauses and seems to take it into consideration for a moment. Kei doesn’t think it actually matters but then the unexpected happens.
Shinji turns to Kei, almost sizing him up, his face deadly serious as he murmurs, “if I tag you, you have to tag Sho.” The vampire understands; it’s Shinji’s tiny bit of revenge for forcing him into things. He nods in agreement, and for a moment Shinji looks like he’s about to change his mind, but Kei makes things easy for him and outstretches a hand rather than trying to come any nearer.
Shinji slaps his hand quickly, eyes locking on Kei. It’s an uneasy truce they’ve made.
“Tag! Kei’s it!” he called regardless, using the blonde’s name forcefully to make it clear that if not for Sho, he would rather shoot Kei than see him. But it’s enough and Kei takes off as quickly as he can, something that his boys’ eyes can barely track as Shinji limps over to a chair, slumping in it to watch what happens.
In the meanwhile, Kei had driven Sho to a corner and then stopped, grinning tiredly at him as the sound of the rain pounded on the roof in the background. The boy looks trapped for a moment, and Kei jogs inward, about to reach his trapped quarry when Sho shifts mid-step and slips away. Kei doesn’t try too hard to catch him, letting him run at the fastest speed his little legs can go and six seconds later, Kei goes after him.
The boy responds by zig-zagging through pillars and then finally behind Toshi, only to have Toshi move and then he’s off again, Kei racing in a blur after him but still not trying too hard until Sho looks back and calls, “catch me now!”
Sho runs into Kei when the vampire all but materialises in front of him, effectively tagging himself as his head hits the vampire in the stomach just hard enough to make the blonde cough once and then look down at him.
“Good try,” the vampire grins crookedly, moss-green eyes gleaming with uncontained mischief, his earlier sleepiness replaced by a good mood now, and he puts his hands in his pockets, not the least bit winded. “Tag.”
Sho looks up. “That’s not fair!” he protests, and Toshi laughs from somewhere before Sho whirls, taking off without a second glance at Kei, all the while calling that he’s going to catch Toshi and then Kei, too. Even Shinji laughs.
Their game lasts as long as the rain does.

Kei smiles.
Behind him comes the shuffling of sleep-clumsy feet, and the blonde hears a yawn before he turns to face Sho. The youth looks at him rather sleepily for a moment, yawning again as his eyes widen in a parody of alertness before he hears the rain and when he does he stops for a moment. A bright, genuine smile spreads across his lips despite the obvious grogginess, and a moment later Kei hears the words he’s been waiting for.
“In a few minutes, want to go out?”
There’s no hesitation in his answer.
